1 month pain free....... after 14 months

My fissure adventure began late november 06 and landed me at the specialist 2 days after xmas waving my cheque book and begging the dr to fix me.

I tried everything going but it was anoheal that really helped me turn a corner. 7 months into my turmoil I was told that I was a candidate for the botox injections but somehow my details fell through the system and all my data re my procedure was lost.

In the meantime things had picked up as I had begun a seriously fibre intensive diet, had begun taking senokot fibre drinks regularly and had practically cut all bread / pasta out of my diet.

Then I went on holiday and discovered fantastic rustic bread again which led to the most chronic of episode of constipation I have ever known and voila, back came the pain with a vengence..... However, I was prepared. I had taken my anoheal with me and began applying it again and went veggie for a week. Things slowly got back to what I had come to consider normal.

For me, normal consisted 3 painful days a week and at least 1 'recovery' day..... I started removing certain foods from my diet to see how I reacted and in early december, came to the conclusion that red meat was my enemy. I tested this theory with a lasagne and sure enough, they symptoms appeared. Once normality was restored, I then tried some sliced roast beef and fell prey once again.

So, since 15th Dec I have not eaten red meat and I have not had an episode smile The anoheal is still in the fridge just in case but I'm feeling remarkably positive about my current condition. The only downside is life without a good chilli but I've bought some veggie mince and am gonna give it a bash tomorrow. Fortunately bacon is still on the menu

If you are beyond the 'pain on passing' stage I urge you to try giving up red meat and see if you benefit.

Hi Just been prescribed with anoheal as GTN gave me horrendous headaches - did you find any side effects with anoheal ? This would help and give me hope of a painless bottom.

I found your observations about red meat really interesting. I too have suffered from anal fissures and two years ago after my third haemmorhoid operation I gave up meat altogether. I still have the occasional problem - but much less problematic. I take Senokot daily too. Another upside is the amount of weight I've lost - over a stone since I gave up meat. I don't drink enough still and OD on tea & coffee which I know isn't great but life is so much better! Constipation is the number one enemy to this condition and although, as I say, I'm still prone, the searing pain (like passing crushed glass as one specialist said) is extremely rare. I really miss crispy duck but just can't see myself going back - the pain and indignity I suffered just isn't worth it. My mother can't cope with vegetarianism which she thinks is some new age travesty and most people still seem to panic when I announce it - but it really has had a massive effect and improved this horrible condition by 95% Best wishes to a pain free existance and embrace that butternut squash!

Delighted to hear any approach is effective for people, but red meat is not the cause for me - have suffered with a chronic fissure for nearly a year and started treatment via consultant rather than chemists treats just 4 months ago. I haven't eaten red meat in 25 years (now 48) although I do eat chicken and fish. Coffee seems to help even tho' it's a bad boy according to nutritionists. Good luck everyone!
