Today is is 1 week since my surgery and for the most part I think I am doing ok. I am doing the PT but I don't think I am walking enough, I can't walk without pain. Not pain in the hip, but on/in the top of the knee and thigh. I don't know if I am impatient (people say I am doing fantastic) but I am not sure At least I can sit here a little while before heading back to bed.
Congratulations on having your FHR! You seem to be right on track. It's more important to rest with your leg elevated and apply ice packs during the first couple of weeks. Talk to your physical therapist. The important thing is to get the muscles arounnd your hip back up and working properly again. This takes time.... weeks.. Each week you will get stronger and will be able to walk a little further. Pain in other areas such as the knee, thigh and back is likely to occur when walking until the hip muscles have healed and working again. Right now, you hip muscles have been weakened and cannot hold your body in the correct alignment when moving. If you persist, it will cause pain to other areas of the body. Again, this is a process and will take weeks. Right now, other than your strengthening exercises, you only need to be taking baby steps. Try to get up once per hour to walk into the next room. This helps to keep your blood flowing and reduce the risk of blood clots.
We'll done Kaura. I think little and often may be best until you build strength and confidence and the pain reduces. Remember to aim to keep ahead of the pain with your meds.
At only 1 week out from surgery I think that your doing alright. But we need to listen to our bodies. You can always let your orthopedic surgeon be aware of increased & unusual type pain.
You are fantastic. I walked around the house a bit. Please be gentle. Take time to heal. Don't be impatient. Do your exercises. As my daughter says....chillax
Hi well done.Don't over do things, please remember that you have had a major operation. One day at a time.Don't be afraid to ask for extra help.regards Amanda h
Hi Kaura, I am 16 days pot op. I also had (have) the knee and thigh pain. As I understand it, that is caused by your new hip being connected to your femur bone. Anybody? Is this correct? Makes sense to me, but unexpected pain. It's all about healing! Don't push yourself too much. Stay with the easier exercises from your PT until your body can heal. Remember--three months before you feel like yourself; a year before " normal"! This was major surgery!
There will be pain in the femur for a few months (6-8 months) until the femur grows around the metal stem implant. Pain in knees (joints) and muscle around the groin is common until the muscles around the hip are work properly to stabilize the body.
