Moring Folks, well here we are again, 3 30 am sitting quietly in the Lounge trying not to distureb my wife,s sleep. I,m 10 days post op. no pain, walking easy with one crutch, but still got a leg like a tree trunk, swollen from hip to toe, the tight stocking on this leg is so sore, keeps me awake at night, but had about 4 hours last night, not too bad I suppose, As a lot of you know you sleep less as you get older anyway. I see the Physio tomorrow, cant wait !!!.. Well now I,ve got my grumbling out the wat, I think I,ll have a cup of tea (that cures most things).
God bless
Brian
Morning Bri,
Am 4 weeks post op and had many 3am brews...am sinking one now NAAFI strength but will say in the early days with my left leg similar to yours I slipped in a wee drop of rum or whisky. I suffered a lot with lack of sleep but gradually it returned. Keep the faith you'll get there.
Hi Brian
Greetings...
Also pint of re ale and Sunderland beating Newcastle 3 _ 0 would help healing!
Take care
Mic
Hi Mic,
You must b getting plenty of sleep, as dreaming !!!
I am 20 days post op, 3:30 am in canada, woke up to ice leg getting muscle spasms, can't sleep also going to physio in morning, be glad when I can sleep all night.
haha nice one! I'm going for 2-0 to the Toon. Sorry mic 😉
Morning Brian, your leg will go down, you are only 10 days post op, but it will get much better soon and will be looking like a willow tree rather than a tree trunk. All the best.
Hi Brian,
If you are quite active, it might be worth asking your consultant if you still need the stocking. My legs were both very swollen after the op (they were before the op too but not to this extent) and the stockings so tight they were in danger of pinching so much round the ankles that they could have worsened my circulation which defeated the object. I was sent home with dispersible aspirin instead. They help us through the period of inactivity immediately after the op when the circulation is compromised but if you are relatively active then you might not need them any more. If they are causing you that much discomfort and distress they might let you stop using them.
Good luck.

Hi Ali and Brian and hippies
I tend to use the disposable asprin am and 2 paracetamol at night....keeps me sane and pain free for these first six weeks. The stockings sound awful!
Maybe if you pay rugby then tree trunk not willow saplings is a better option?

P'S. For American folk here, Sunderland are the team formed by the Sunderland socialist teachers federation in 1879. The Toon are the Orcs from Lord of the Rings movie !
Hi Brian,
Take your sock off. I am nearing 5 weeks post op and was told to not wear the socks all the time, which is opposite of my previous 2 THR's. However, my leg swelled up hugely for 2 days and tried the sock , and it was painful so off with the sock!
My rehab facility told me to pick one time a day to wear the socks. They were against wearing them 24 hours a day.
Hang in there!

Hi Dawn, thanks, I just spoken with the Sister on the Hospital ward, I can take them off duting the day but she wants me to put them back on for sleeping at night. I can live with that, they are sending me some larger ones. Just been for a walk outside, only a couple of hundred yards, no problem but slight pain in the thigh muscle. I told my wife that I had read on here, that its good for me to have a couple shots of whisky every day, but somehow I dont think she fell for it !!!.
God bless
Brian
Hi, No injections, I have to take two soluble Asprins in water every morning for 6 weeks, I have spoken to the ward Sister this morning, she said the swelling is normal and I can leave the stockings off in the daytime because I,m quite active.
Brian
Hi Brian
Another possibility? The stockings come in different sizes. If you're advised to continue wearing them, it wouldn't be unreasonable for you to ask for a larger size.
Good luck with it

Hi, sorry to gate crash but that info is useful for me as left ankle and top of foot still swollen after 4 weeks. Thank you an best wishes.
Hi brian
how I hate night time. Every two hours up for a wee no matter how much I restrict intake and last night had leg ache rather like "restless leg" syndrome. Could not sleep. However everyone says this will pass so I guess we just to work though it. Trouble is I am a musician and booked to play in hotel on Wednesday night so just wondering how I do this without sleep!!!
Thinking of you.
