10 Weeks post op after a Navicular fusion surgery

Hello,

My doctor allowed partial weight bearing 2 weeks ago (50%), and I am using a walker to walk about 70-100 steps a day. The past couple of days, I am having a lot of pain and swelling. Today I only took about 10 steps.

The weather is also getting cooler, and I wonder if that could be a factor for pain.

I would like to know what people have experienced once they were allowed to weight bear. Thank you!

I had surgery for torn ligaments and chipped cartilage. Was told I could do partial weight bearing after 3 days but waited two weeks. For about two months I would try to do a little walking in a boot with walker but would have moderate pain a few hours later. My surgeon said I should continue weight bearing but it just worried me that I was delaying my recovery by stressing the ankle too much. I kept trying the partial weight bearing every few days to see if it resulted in pain. Like you, I was doing about 100 steps a day around the house. Just this last week, about 10 weeks post op, I am getting only minimal pain, so I'm going to continue and slightly increase the amount of walking each day.

However, I have talked with others who had various types of injuries who just toughed it out and endured the pain. They also recovered.

Hope this helps.

Ice is good for relieving ankle pain.

Good luck. Richard

Thank you! I wish you a speedy recovery!

I am glad you shared your experience as my physical therapist told me that there shouldn’t be any pain so I was worries as to why I am having so much pain. I think I will keep pushing through the pain as patience is not a strong virtue of mine and I want to be able to walk by the end of the year

Thanks! I do ice it regularly but there is still pain during night.

I'm surprised by your physical therapist. I've never heard anyone say there was no pain with physical therapy.

Yeah my surgeon said I should expect pain and swelling for ag least 6 months after the surgery but the therapist said I should slow down due to the pain as there should be no pain with walking. I was surprised by that too. I think I will listen to my surgeon and my body

I had my talo navicular fusion on June 21st. I am now back in normal shoes but still finding it quite painful to walk much and still using a crutch when out. Ankle still swells quite a bit during the day which is where my pain is. I have been told to expect swelling for at least 6 months but the pain I am getting is hindering my recovery. Its all in my ankle, not around the fusion. Grrrrrrr!

Sorry to hear that! I was also told to expect pain/swelling for a minimum of at least 6 months! It has been a long journey but I am hopeful that I will be able to walk about without any crutch/walker/boot by the end of the year.

Good luck to you!
