I had my thyroid removed in 2008 and started taking levothyroxine 100 mcg. I felt good allergies are gone but dry skin, brittle nail and hair fall still there. Last October I felt lightheaded and went to see a Dr., he did test and results that my tsh is 11.4 and T4 is 1.28. He increased my dose to 125 mcg and another test after a month. My cholesterol is up and my sugar went up to 102. After a month, test result is worst my tsh was 100 and mt t4 is .54. I asked him why this happened, my diet was like more on fruits and vegies especially fiber . I usually eat oatmeal after 1 hour of my levo does this make it worst or not being absorbed by my body. I only started oatmeal after learning my cholesterol is up. I wasn't advised that fibers can affect my levo absorption not until I read some discussion. I was wondering maybe this is the reason why my result got worst or something else. I am not eating any red meat nor fried foods. Any advise. I am so afraid and getting stressed with this. I exercise everyday for at least 30 minutes. Any suggestion.
Hi Di,
I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and I will be going for a biopsy of a nodule in my thyroid this week. I may in a bit of a different position than you but yoy may want to examine your diet for gluten, soy and dairy intake. I firmly believe your diet not only affects your weight but also affects your over all health, and unfortunately some very delicious things are just plain bad for us. I was initially only told I have hypothryoidism and upon receiving my diagnosis, I started doing research and learned that it is speculated that things such as gluten, dairy, and soy in your diet, as well as chemicals (BPA, aluminum, parabens) in personal care items such as soap/lotion/toothpaste and household supplies such as detergents/cleaning solutions can all be bad for your body and cause an immune system reaction. I started an elimination diet - it's not the easiest thing to do but I lost about 10 lbs in about a month (I was around 150 and am down to 139 - I wasn't trying to lose weight, hadn't really been well enough to work out due to random colds and flus, but I'm sure the weight loss was due to cutting out so many items that happened to be full of calories and causing inflammation - my lower abdomin has always been my trouble spot and it's practically flat now). Again, I still have my thyroid and haven't starting taking the synthetic hormones yet - so I'm in a bit of a different position, but it might be worth looking into things like this.
Hi Lisa, appreciate advise and will start taking my levo at night and change my diet. I also forgot to mention that I am on high blood maintenance. It is really hard for my diet to maintain for both. I have seen both endo and gp and the same advise was given. I'm just happy to find this web and share and get to know different situations and ideas I can try.
Mine is genetic as my mom and her sister had their thyroid removed though they never had any maintenance and they are already 78 and 70 respectively.
Hi Di,
Lost my thyroid to cancer 2001...
my endocrinologist has my take Synthroid-Levothyroxine 125 mcg and Cytoxan 10 mcg early morning and then wait 2 hours before eating or taking any other medication.
My endocrinologist also has me on cholesterol control which I must take in the late afternoon.
Her further instructions are that because I had cancer my TSH must be kept no greater than .05 and it must be detectable. My TSH Is .01 which is admittedly hyper.
My blood is drawn every six months and includes testing for antibodies.
TSH100??????? You must feel awful...I am so sorry.
kind regards
judith
