am 11 weeks anterior thr. Im 54 years old. Was very active until my right hip started hurting. Cross fit, swimming, hiking, biking. I have been in pain every day for almost 3 years. Finally had thr in April 2018 everything was good until 3 weeks after when I started having horrible groin pain. So bad I had to use crutches. Dr. Told me it was normal, take it easy, stay on crutches. 2 months later, I'm still crutches! I have pain down my leg, in my ground and in my hip. Its like I never had the surgery. I feel defeated and depressed.I'm tired all the time, I can't do anything fun, go places with friends or family. Is this just my life now? My head goes to a dark place, I'm miserable.
Hi Suzanne
I want to say I'm so sorry you are having difficulties..I'm just wondering if you can get a second opinion? It's awful that you can't get around after 2 months...I would insist on some sort of test..I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Hope this all heals soon ..
Connie
Dear Suzanne, I am 6 months post op posterior approach. Sadly, I still need a cane and have groin pain. Also, a lot of muscle pain due to posterior approach....sciatica from tight muscles. Nothing seems to help. The doc says hip is ok, so not really interested in the rest of it. My feelings are the same as yours. Is this how I'll be forever? I have been limping and in pain for a year now.....before and after surgery. It's hard because we had the surgery to feel better and I feel worse now. It is very disheartening to say the least. I hope you'll be better soon.
You should not be in that much pain a couple of months after a THR, I'd get a second opinion.
Definitely get a second opinion. Groin pain is indicative of poorly placed hardware & possible bursitis caused by this.
Where are you? I’m in Australia & can recommend Dr Michael O’Sullivan who is in Sydney.
All the very best.
My first thought was your Psoas muscle was stretched or somehow damaged during the surgery. I've read it's common with the Anterior approach. Do some research and see if your symptoms match what others are saying. I'm facing a revision and fear this Psoas issue. When I asked my surgeon, he just acted like he was clueless. Often I think these Dr.'s know it can be an issue but don't want to deal with it after they have "done their job". Best of luck - I hope you heal quickly.
Hi suzanne,
I am at 12 weeks today, I have a slight pain in the groin when I walk/exercise too much and use a stick when out walking as the thigh bone makes me limp slightly, as it is still healing from being sawn, drilled and the implant implanted. I am behind a lot of people I know but, I am not rushing the healing as I do not want to encounter future problems.
I think you need to demand some answers and not just accept what the doctor says without having an explaination, "it's normal" is not good enough when you know most people are not suffering as you are.
Dear Suzanne
I'm very sorry to hear about your pain. No that is certainly NOT normal and if your surgeon considers it normal then be has a logt of explaining to do!
I suggest you get a second and perhaps third opinion from a good specialist hip surgeon working out of a different hospital!
.Good luck, Richard
Thanks Connie,
I'm surprised at all the replies so quickly! I have thought about going to another Dr. But I'm not sure what kind. I feel like my ortho is done with me. He looks at my xray and 'his" work looks good so, not his problem! That leads me to believe another ortho would be the same.
Linda, I'm so sorry to hear this? 6 months later???
I 2as do excited to finally get my new hip. Get my life back. I feel worse than before the surgery. Hard to smile and be positive. I cry. A lot. I'm sure my husband is sick of seeing me and hearing me complain. I can hardly stand to be around me myself!
I think so too. Do I go to another ortho??
I'm in Colorado, Denver area. My Dr. Said everything looked to be in the right place. Told me I over did it and made my psoas angry. Although the groin pain is much better, the pain down the front of my leg and in my hip is bad enough to keep me on crutches. I can't lift my leg when laying down. Bringing it forward when I walk is painful.
What type of Dr. Should I go to for second opinion?
My Dr. Told me it was my psoas! Said I over did it and made it angry. Just throws pills at me. The groin pain has nearly gone away but, so much pain down the front of my leg and in hip. I can't lift my leg up if I'm laying down, lifting my leg to put pants on is painful.... I just don't know what kind of Dr. To go to for this.
Thank you for your reply and thoughts and, good luck to you.
Thank you Richard!
I going to make some phone calls tomorrow!
Yes! I work with a man who has his hip gone a little before me. He told me he was good as new after 2 months! I know we all heal differently... But, I feel cheated 😞 thanks for your reply. I hope you heal completely soon
I ended up with a very inflamed Psoas when I was trying to build my quad muscles. And I was almost 1 year post op. I had to stop exercising completely and rest. Lifting your leg, stairs, cycling - it all hurt and I had to stop. It took months to calm down.
Dear Suzanne,
Sorry to hear you're In so much pain. Did you get a second opinion? It’s too much to bear. I hope something can be done.
Take care,
Millie
Dear Suzanne,
Still an ortho, I think. Hope you feel better.
Millie
Please use this forum for any clarification on what doctors are saying to you.
A good surgeon will be able to diagnose your symptoms. Check out tendonopathy caused by acetabular cup misplacement or acetabular cup protruding. I don’t know if this is what’s going on with you but at least you can ask some questions.
I can relate as I had a similar story to yours.
Write down & diarise what you’ve been told and have a list of questions you want answers to.
Research your area for specialists in tendonopathy.
All the best. This won’t be an easy path for you.
Tap into your CrossFit grit and you will get through this.
Stay in touch. We are here to support you.
Thank you so so much! I feel like I live 0n google trying to find out whats wrong. Sooooo much information. It makes my head spin! Everything saying something different. I will for sure look up tendonopathy. I havent come across that one.
Thanks for the support. Everyone that has reached out, it just makes me feel better. Friends and family are great but, they don't get it and, I'm sure, they are tired of listening to me complain.
