11 weeks Post Op - update

Hello everyone (I was originally Vikki 19024 but can't use that profile for some reason)

So I had the Op (TLHR) on 27th August. All went well, Spinal block with sedation. I was awake and aware when they started but decided that I really didn't like it so went to sleep - very sureal experience especially seeing my foot at an impossible angle at one point!

I went into to mild post operative shock, sweats and chills but something magidc in my drip sorted that out, up and about the next day and then home the day after that - a day early, this was a minor mistake in retrospect as pain management at first was very difficult especially with the blood thinners meaning I couldn't take diclofenac or ibroprufen.

It hurts at first I'm not going to lie, IT DOES HURT. but it's a different hurt, a getting better and healing hurt, which somehow makes it easier to deal with.

My employer after trying to tell me that I would be back at work after 2 weeks rang me 4 days after the operation to tell me that my role was being made redundant LOL. So rather than putting myself out and my recovery at risk to work from home I bunged in a sick note for 6 weeks and have returned 7 weeks post operation on short hours which I'm hoping to stay on until I leave. I have plenty of breathing space as I've been here a long time and don't leave until Jan, so plenty of time to recover before I find a new job.

My daughter (Now 7) coped really quite well, she stayed with her gran the night of her op and was really quite worried but I managed to rouse myself sufficiently to send her a text message on the evening of the Op.

I have recently gone to no walking aid for most of the time but find I ache if I walk for too long without a stick, I think its just a case of keep trying to walk further stickless every day.

Recovery is frustrating and I sometimes feel like I should be doing better, my partner insists I'm pushing myself too fast but I think I'm ok.

I hope everyone else is well and those that have had the Op since mine..... Happy new hip!

Hi Vix

Glad you are back and better.

Work {a lot of them{ do not have a clue...do they?  You are doing the sensible thing.

There are so many different kids of pain/aches arent there? Some are OK and you can cope with them.

Dont push yourself....I was told you get no medals for bravery after surgery.

Yes...keep trying to do a bit more or go a bit further each time but dont beat yourself up if you have to use sticks for a while longer than you think you should.

Take Care

Hi vix44, my advise to you is slow down take your time that muscle is not gonna heal overnight. Use your cane to walk use your cane on the opposite side of your operated leg. If you had the posterior approach your muscle was cut and stitiched, now you're strengthening your muscle with physical therapy sessions.

Are you still on precautions? Follow the precaution and do your exercises with care, if you use weights light weights meaning start with 10 pound weights.

Take walks with the cane if you start to feel pain sit at a park bench relax then return home and put on ice for 10 minutes every hour. Next day try it again, start wallking up and down the stairs, start at a few steps at a time this will help.

Take your time i know you'll feel much better and will recover faster.

Put vegetables and fish on your menu.

If you have a high protein supplement you favor do it unless you have allergies you may not able to use protein shakes especially if you're lactose intolerant.

Hope you feel better, Peace.

If you had your op on August then you're 3 months post op. You should be walking without your cane. But you need balance, hoping you doing physical therapy. strengthening your muscle.

I am 13 weeks post op now and after about ten weeks I thought I was really good and walked without a cane. But I found I was still limping without so I have gone back to a cane for part of the day especially if I feel tired.

Still slight pain in my leg but nothing to what it was before.

Hi Vix,  I had revision of RTHR a week after you and no way could I contemplate going back to work yet.  I was doing really well, driving, swimming, walking etc but over the last week seem to have had a relapse with sciatica in the operated leg.  I've even had to have a rest in the afternoon this week which I haven't done for several weeks now.  I'm hoping it's just two steps forward and one step back but I'm a bit low at the moment.  I think they're expecting me back at work next month but I'm not going if I don't feel up to it.  Glad you are getting there though and hope your good recovery continues.

Thanks desi, not quite 3 months, it was at the end of August

Thanks jean, I carry my collapsible stick with me, doing much better

Hi Stella no don't go back until you feel you can we all heal differently, going back has helped my sleeping but other than that it took me back a few steps, don't go back until you can handle that, the step backs do bring you low.

take care
