I got hip replacement in 2007 and all was well until a few months ago I fell down hard on kitchen tile floor and I did get xray and it was ok but now 5 months later it is starting to pain me. What is my next step and could it be I need MRI to see the problem. I was hoping to get 20 years out of that hip replacement.
Oh golly that is such very bad luck for you. I would suspect that the most likely reason for your pain is some sort of damage such as a cracked bone but if your stem was cemented perhaps I has become loose.
Don't know if a CT scan would be better than a MRI scan but you need a resolution sooner than later.
All the best

Hi Misslottie
So sorry to hear about your fall and it appears it has done some damage. Did you see your orthopedic surgeon with xray or was it just a report from xray unit? My orthopedic surgeon said that the person doing the report sometime misses things/does not see the big picture so you are better seen with the xray by orthopedic surgeon who will notice things that others dont. I feel you should sort this out soon in case it becomes a bigger problem.
All the best
Hi Misslottie:
I too; am sorry to hear about your fall. Let's hope it can be taken care of quickly since there is nothing worse then that nagging excruciating hip-pain. I am from Canada, and was hoping some-one could answer a question regarding hip revision surgery. I had a total hip replacement last October of 2016, however it is a real mess since I am experiencing clicking and popping in my groin area when I try to walk which is very painful. Now they have decided to send me to Toronto, Ontario to have hip revision, and wondered if anyone was from the Toronto area that had this done. Mine will be done at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Has anyone been there or have had hip replacement or hip revision surgery? I would certainly appreciate some feedback. Thanks.
Good Friday morning misslottie! Sorry to hear of your fall. If X-ray didn't show anything then yes an MRI would probably be next step. I remember getting an MRI on my elbow, I banged the you know what out it coming out of shower, screamed for 10 minutes it was so painful, the MRI showed a hairline fracture. So had it been hurting for past 5 months or just started hurting again? Is the pain in your thigh or hip? I hope that all goes well for you and you can go those 20 years on that hip!! Hugs 🤗Linda
The pain is in my right hip and sort of the backside of hip. I know there is something wrong. I go to ortho next week for shot in my knee from a different fall ugh.My cats trip me up all the time they are old and dont scoot out of the way. I have to be so careful. If I fall I cant get up anymore sadly. I have had spinal stenosis for years so lower back hurts and no strength in it and my left ankle was smashed years but I did not go to the doc and let it heal up on its own and it didnt really hurt till when I started favoring my left side cuz of rght hip pain. And since the hip replacement I been trying to get a surgery or something for my ankle but no one will help me. They want me to wear a brace that costs $1000 and I cant afford it the insurance dont pay. So as it is I could barely walk and get around and now this. The right hip again. It was so bad before the replacement I was in wheel chair. Which I gave to someone a few years back so I guess I need another one. Omg. Say it isnt so. LOL. Thanks for the reply.
Wow! I'm really sorry for all this you are going through....being in pain 24/7 is just terrible! I'll keep you in my prayers and I really hope you get better and find good drs to help. Where are you from? Linda
Thank you I been praying hard. From US Phoenix Arizona. I got pain meds already for my ankle and back. But no meds can help pain in hip area. Where are you from? Do you have a THR?
It did not hurt right away when I fell and they did xray said it was all intact so its been 5 months and now it is little by little hurting more and more each day.I need a CT scan or MRI to see whats really wrong.I pray I dont need another surgery. I am heavy set no one want to do it I know. ugh.
Dear Misslottie
I appreciate that it will not suit everyone and it is only for short term use as I understand it but morphine worked for me.
Cheers Richard
Dear Misslottie
Keep pushing for those scans as there has to be a reason and a remedy.
Cheers Richard
I'm from deep in the heart of Texas! 🤠Yes I had my first hip replacement last July 2016, three weeks later I find out I dislocated it and 2 days later I'm having a total hip revision...😢 Was 6 weeks non weight bearing and no hip exercises or hip flexion past 80 degrees for 6 weeks. I cried practically every day. It was a big blow as I've always been very active even though pain. It's been a year now and am just starting to feel a little better. I'm now dealing with nerve pain and sensitivity in my thigh. Started about 5/4 months later and have been dealing with it for almost 7 months. Am seeing a neurologist. Also was seeing a pain dr. Had injections in the cutaneous nerve with little relief. Just got a nerve conduction study and MRI of my back. Next week I go back to see him again to see if there's anything to do about it. Pain dr gave me a few options but none that I'm ready for!! I got this operation to be done with pain and wound up with this. Never a sure thing!! I'm also having issues with my left knee! 😩 I don't want anymore surgeries!! I too pray every day in hopes that one day I'll be happy and feel better.......
Oh my so you know. Well I hope yours will work out. My THR never hurt all these 11 years. I was blessed it healed up fine I went home 5 days after I decline a rehab and just me and my elderly dad to help me some I made it. I weighed 230 then and I am 6ft 1 in tall. Now I weigh maybe 250 I am tall and big not short and fat lol I am size of bball player and I fear no doctor will help me as I had to really search for one back then and he is at childrens hospital now ugh. I got a dr now a hip and knee and he gives meinjections in my knee to stop the pain every 3 months but he is the type will discriminate large heavy women for a surgery I know it. If I was a man it would be no problem. I pray for favor for you and me both. I rebuke big problems in the name of Jesus.
I am not afraid of pain meds have taken all and every type thru the past 20 years for hip back and left ankle. I just am sad I will need surgery and it will be hard to find a dr to do it as I am overweight ..at 6ft 1 I weighed 245 for original and I had to search alot of docs before i find one who would help me and now he is at childrens hospital ugh. I have hip and knee dr he gives me injections for a bad knee from falling down fell over my cat last year I get the injection every 3 months. Now when I go I have to tell him about my hip. He is the type will discriminate when it come to surgery I know. I think the fall I had in March over the cat has done something to it altho I got an xray then said it was intact. But something is terrible wrong sadly. Morphine cost to much my insurance barely covers it but I may change my tune in time. Thanks for the reply.
Dear Miss Lottie
I've been fortunate in life that I have been able to eat as much of anything and do not seems to put on weight, however this year my weight has crept up a bit so I'm on my guard! Certainly being a light weight has I believe helped me in my various surgeries but I can quite appreciate that if one is heavier than is ideal i must be difficult to loose weight by exercising.
All the best
Richard
