I went back to Wrightington yesterday for check up. I know things havent been as good as i thought, but due to the fact I cannot straighten my leg properly, I have to go back to have manipulation under anaesthetic.
The consultant said there are risks that this could break my leg, and maybe need plates put on the break, or even have to have a new knee.
im more scared of this manipulation than ive been about the knee replacement.
i havent had proper physio all along. Even the knee class is closed for two weeks
christine TKR 12 weeks
Hi. I am post op 8 weeks . Had op at wrightington also. I was referred for physio with no problems. What's gone wrong?
Robert
Christine, this needs sorting because you need to be able to walk properly. Have you not been back to your gp with your problems, I say this because often they can contact the hospital and get the ball rolling quicker than if you were to leave messages with the various departments. Christina
That sounds awful! I cant straighten my knee either ( five weeeks) and at this moment im lying in bed with my heel raised and two kilos of flour on my knee to try to force it straight. After a few minutes it does really begin to hurt though. I havent been getting much physio either. Once I can drive at 6 weeks ill ne going regularly i think . Hope you can Avoid the manipulation but Ive seen on here several people who have had it successfully with no broken bones!!!
Hi Robert
whats gone wrong is the lack of physio appointments in my area. Ive been about 4 times in 12 weeks. This is to a knee class with other TKR people. All we do is 12 exercises in the room on various equipment for 3 mins.
so im only there 40 mins tops. Im doing exercises at home, but my knee is still swollen and always aching.
ive been on MST slow release morphine and Gabapentin for nerve pain. Im seeing the pain consultant at Leigh hospital on friday, as on top of this, i have 2 torn ligaments in the other knee
Hi Christine sorry to hear you have had such a bad time. I opted for my local hospital which is north Manchester. I go weekly on a one to one basis for 30 mins. Then it's all upto me with exercises galore. I go to hydo therapy and steam room or sauna. It helps. My bend is 110 . Leg almost straight. But only after exercises. If your not happy with your treatment go to pals. They will help.

Does this help. When I had problems I called the arthroplasty tech support 01257 256372. They were great. Physios at hospital is 01257 256307. Hope it helps.

Hi
ther's risks with manipulation, but I had one on my previous knee and it made such a difference. I have a similar problem with my second knee and am hoping that my consultant suggests manipulation when I see him in 2 weeks time. You feel so much better afterwards and can begin to make real good strides (if you pardon the pun) towards recovery.
I hope thats the same for me patsyrose. Im quite worried about the risks
I just had a followup visit with the surgeon today following a manipulation 2 weeks ago. I thought I was doing quite badly but the surgeon is pleased. He said a manipulation is not a quick fix but requires hard work and slow progress just as the original tkr did. 2 things I have learned from this.
Pain control is still essential, and it is also essential to take anti-inflammatories as well. My quad muscle was so painful after the manipulation that it prevented me from bending the knee. It wasn't until I started on Aleve s well as the oxycodone, that I got any relief from that muscle pain.
My surgeon said that my manipulation was an easy one because it was bend that I didn't have. He said that a manipulation for straightening the knee is more difficult and usually requires cutting the scar tissue rather than just breaking it. I would think about a second opinion if your doctor is thinking he will just break the scar tissue.
I was also worried about a bone breaking but I think that might be more of concern if you have osteoporosis. I think it's not such a consideration if you have healthy bones.
Aw, I am so sorry for you but. Am praying that all will be well, much better than you thought.
