12 weeks post op THR

I continue to have some limping immediately when I get up after sitting

I started climbing stairs , about 4 flights per day, doing leg raises while on my back and on my side.  This seems to help a little.  I also walk 1 mile twice a day

It probably just takes more time for all the healing

I have trouble putting on my socks and shoes on the operated side.  Hopefully this will improve with more time

It will. I’m also 12 weeks post op. I recovered very fast (rare). I was running on treadmill at 5 weeks. On exercise bike the day of discharge for hospital. Good luck.

Limping immediately after getting up from a seated position is really common - it will eventually disappear with exercise.  Putting on shoes and socks  also gets easier with time.

Best wishes

Graham

Thx

I no longer have problems sleeping on either side, but realize that my days of running, basketball, judo, etc are over

I can certainly identify with this.  Seems like you are working fast also, like myself.  I went out today, walked a mile then up and down 122 steps and a mile home.  A bit sore but surviving.  Normally, first thing in morning cannot sit long then arise without having difficulty walking with stiffness and pain.  5 weeks+ following THR.  Now walking with one cane.  In home, none.  Name is Ed as well.  Guess it goes with the territory

You are much more active than I! I can put on shoes and socks at 6 1/2 weeks, but yesterday got a new therapist.  She massaged my incision and today I am in pain! I walked around 3 large stores this morning and had breakfast out and wondered if I was going to make it  back across the parking lot to my apartment. I actually had to use the cane which I had with me but have stopped using.  I'm headed back to work Thursday and wonder how I will manage all the walking! I limp for about 6-7 steps upon getting up from a seated position and have a sedentary job. I'm 68. Good luck...seems as if each one of us are different!

68 and still working?  Good for you.  Just keep working at it.  Sometimes I take Paracetamol too (Tylenol). It seems to help some.

Sorry but putting your socks on breaks the 90 degree rule and I would rather be safe than sorry for a few months....what are you trying to prove!! I know someone going to exercise classes too soon and her hip popped out....be sensible...

Well Linda, thanks for your concern, but my surgeon lifted all my hip precautions at my post op at 5 weeks and one day, so I think I'm good....

Yes I am and will probably work past 70 God willing! Love my job. i'm taking ibuprofen and it helps a little.

Linda, exercise classes are different from walking while in PT don’t you think?  I have broken the 90 degree rule a few times myself without consequences.  I will see my surgeon next Friday for my first post op and anticipate permission to use my bike again to swim at my gym. Furthermore, I New a professional cyclist who returned to racing after a THR within 2 months.  Everyone is different.

I share your frustration, I am wondering if I will be able to carry on with restoring my old classic sports car eventually, I know I won't be able to lift engines bodily out of the body as I used to do.

I am 75 and 7 weeks post op. I quickly got used to putting on shows &socks and not much limping when I walk ( I HAVE GOT to concentrate on walking heel toe  though). My big problem is my legs feel like two heavy poles of metal when I walk.  Like lead. I used to be such a fast walker, nipping along from A to B  as quick as lightning. Now it’s just plod, plod, plod. I can’t imagine ever walking quickly ever again 😢😢😢 x x

I agree cycling walking, exercising fine...all to the good...bending down putting on socks etc no I don't agree....at 10 weeks I still use my sock aid...

Dear Linda

I agree with you regardless of what the surgeon says. Dislocating is not fun and can set one back badly and for what? Just using a sock aid for a month or two longer surely is not such a big deal!

As they say better safe than sorry.

Cheers, Richard
