My 12 yr old son was prescribed pizotifen 1.5mg yesterday after suffering years of miagraine, after reading the comments I don,t think I will be giving this drug to him. How sad that the side affects were not even mentioned by the GP and I had to do my own detective work. Thank you for this great site.
like wise we asked the GP if there was any side affects and we were told no.
After looking at this board and other info, we have decided that will no be giving our daughter this drug.
Good luck
I have been on pizotifen for 20 years from the age of 18 - it changed my life - I was able to lead a normal life without having a migraine every week. I do eat more but in 20 years I am only 1.5 stones heavier than I was at age 18. (My doseage is 0.5mg)
Even if I put on more weight the benefits of this drug far outweigh the minimal side effects.
In the last 10 years I have cut down the amount I take and I now only take it once a week and I only very rarely have a migraine (and never the day after I have taken one)
I would not worry about the weight gain too much.
What has happened since? My daughter was prescribed 1.5 mg evenings for two weeks rising to 3.0mg after that. Day 2 she had a migraine, and now can't get out of bed - very sleepy - slept when she came home from school, and almost impossible to wake her this morning.
My daughter was prescribed Pizotifen at 13, and it certainly helped with the migraines, but she did feel slightly sick every morning. I found that leaving a ginger nut biscuit by her bed for her to eat as soon as she woke up helped with that. She didn't need the Pizotifen after about 12 months, so maybe some kids grow out of migraines?
