14 year old MOM hip with weird symptoms

Hi

I've had previous revisions on the other hip but this feels different.

Does anyone have an old MOM hip with similar symptoms if:

My CoC levels are pretty low

Difficulty sitting or lying down

Swelling around, hip, butt and thigh that worsens at night

Yes the pain is awful

Swelling makes the hip sorer and stiffer

Without the pain relief I'd be non weight bearing

Familiar to anyone? Had CT scan and waiting for the result is stressing me out.

oh Bones,

I am so sorry tor ead this -that sounds painful -

No, I can't help you here - maybe there will be someone here who can ...

warm welcome to this forum Bones ...

please come back anytime to share - when will you know the result?

big warm hug

Hi Bones, Ive had 2 revisions through corrosion of my CoC head reacting with the Titanium stem. I had huge swelling and pain. Mine was a Psuedo tumour and necrotic tissue, only diagnosed by MRI withMARS sequencing. !2 weeks out from latest revision where everything was taken out! Struggling still with pain and movement but my situation is very extreme. Not sure what sort of tissue imaging youll get from CT scan. but if still not helpful to you, do get a MRI. Where are you?

Good luck and hugs.

Hi Patsy

Thanks for your reply.  Saw my OS yesterday.  He says that he is very happy with the results of the CT scan - both implants look to be in good condition (even the MoM one) and no sign of psuedo tumors etc.  He is now going to send me for a MRI with the special metal suppressing imaging (it's what you refer to isn't it?).  He wants to double check everything ie hips, pelvis and my back as well.  My CoC levels are ok too.  So this process is going to take a few more months.

I'm in NZ - bred and born .  At any rate had a very interesting conversation with him.  I'd had 13 operations as a child for DDH -   (I didn't know this).  Although it is bilateral - it was the right hip that needed all the surgery due to the hip socket being so deformed.    At any rate, these days he would now be looking at just replacing my hip socket with a 3D one and giving me a replacement joint and he would be happy to do this for quite young patients eg 18.  We both agree that an osteotomy is just a waste of time - it's a horrible operation.  But it's what was on offer 30 years ago and I got a year out of it before reverting back to having the pain etc.

Also, he tested my muscles using a needle.  Left leg is ok, but in the right hip I have no abductors and no feeling around them (muscle preservation back in the 60's wasnt the priority it is now).  He thinks it would be worth looking at a Sharrard procedure (muscle transplant).  If I had abductors, I would have something to strengthen and help with my Trendleberg gait, which is not helping with my hip, pelvic and back pain.  The other problem is that the sit bone (ischium?) never developed properly and is a lot smaller on that side, which just adds to hip, pelvic and back pain.

I am so glad that he took the time to explain things properly to me - it helps to ease the anxiety about this.  Things have been looking pretty bleak lately and maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Hi Bones. Gosh youve been through a lot and at such a young age. Makes me feel quite bad cause Ive been strugging with pain and feeling quite teary! Pleased to hear that your implants and tissue look good, really interested n what you say about the muscle transplant. Ive been left with only about a third of each muscle group with a lot of inflamatory process still going on that is continuing to do more damage. Ive been told that it will be 2 years to know what mobility I will have. Saw a recent newspaper article recently about stem cell trials to renew muscle. this was in NZ too. Clearly all the Rugby playing is driving a lot of research into this area. Sadly Im just outside London in Kent a bit too far to travel! Keep in touch. PatsyX

Hi Patsy

It's all ar the talk stage currently. Have to do the MRI and see him again which is going to take a couple of months.

Beyond excited at the thought of having more hip muscles to help my pelvis and back. Hadn't heard about stem cells being implanted here in NZ. Rugby injuries are pretty severe at times and I understand the team has its own physio, sports, orthopedic specialists pretty quickly when they need them.

Hope your pain and muscle damage improve xx
