After being branded as a 'medical mystery' by a doctor and after spending the past 15 months being passed back and forth from hospital to GP to hospital to GP (and so on..) I'd like to turn to the internet for some advice! Background: 22yo, female, overweight but otherwise healthy (suspected thyroid problem under investigation) no other medical conditions, rarely visited doctor before symptoms arose, bed wetting and urinary troubles until the age of 8. My symptoms began over 2 years ago now as upper right abdominal pain, began taking myself to Manchester's walk in centre whilst I was a student studying there. Diagnosis was always UTI so I stopped attending. September 2018 I suffered first episode of cholecystitis and was admitted to hospital as an inpatient. Ultrasound showed 2 stones and dilated CBD. I was treated and discharged. November 2018 I revisited hospital with the same symptoms, an MRCP was ordered and took place in December 2018 with unremarkable results, no stones or sludge present. Symptoms persisted and a focused ultrasound of gallbladder was ordered which showed no signs of gallstones. Symptoms persisted and worsened. Visited hospital again in April 2019 with same symptoms and no resolution. 3 hospital visits later I was diagnosed with biliary colic and had an urgent cholecystectomy. Whilst waiting for cholecystectomy I was also admitted and treated for pancreatitis. I was under the impression the cholecystectomy in June 2019 would fix all of my problems and boooooy was I wrong! Symptoms persisted and dramatically worsened. Pathology results from GP in July showed raised PTH, low folate, low calcium but otherwise remarkable. Endoscopy was performed and a diagnosis of helicobacter pylori (treated with antibs) and a hiatal hernia (prescribed lansaprazole). One ultrasound revealed I have a duplex kidney on the left. Nothing has been mentioned about this since. Since then symptoms have remained persistent; pain in upper right quadrant of abdomen spreading round to back (just below ribs, where hips start) pain around centre of abdomen near bellybutton, lots of gurgling rumbling and gas, complete loss of appetite, occasional vomiting during night or early morning, extreme fatigue (I could spend all day every day in bed and it wouldn't be enough rest), itchiness all over body mainly to back and stomach which spreads to face when symptoms worsen with no visible rash but a few spots. God I hope I didn't miss anything out. Please let me know your thoughts/advice, this is something which is slowly ruining my life. I was an active musical theatre performer before this illness took over my life now I have very little social life, have lost 3 part time jobs, failed a year at university and had to give up my independence and move back in with my parents since suffering these symptoms. And whilst I appreciate the stress the NHS is under, waiting 9 hours in an emergency room to see a doctor for less than 2 minutes who will refer me back to my GP who can do nothing but make a referral for me to revisit the hospital in 3-4 months just really isn't cutting it for me.
Hi maddisonh..
Have you been tested for low vit d and B12 both of which will cause digestion problems and extreme fatigue if low. Also, itching can indicate liver problems. If you haven’t been tested ask your doctor to test all your vitamins and minerals and liver enzymes..
