16 days since son's second THR & crazy busy

Yes, my son has joined your club - 2 hips done in 4 months! The story of what happened to make the doctor change his mind will have to wait for another time.

Each hip experience is SO different. I think it took son THREE MONTHS to emerge from the fog because of general anesthesia AND he was in such a debilitated condition prior to surgery. But, he didn't have much incision pain. He had a spinal this time, and instead of taking four hours to be conscious enough to leave, he had clarity in an hour, and along with it, pain.

But today he has not taken any narcotics, but did feel a bit hungover this morning. He is taking acetaminophen and naproxen.

Yesterday, he went to a meeting on campus and walked 6 blocks to and from. He was not in pain, but he was so tired and had discomfort. It was 95F feels like 108 yesterday. He is not walking properly - stride to short - but does not use his cane. sigh. Today he went for a deep tissue massage, and thought it helped.

Hippies, if you've had a bad allergic reaction to oxycodone, DO NOT LET THEM GIVE IT TO YOU AGAIN! Son had the waterfall sweats, itching and dizziness from this with the first hip. So he told everyone he could he did not want this. Instead they gave him a low dose of hydromorphone. After ten days, we started splitting them. Yes, we know you're not supposed to. We even split the oxycontin. It just made it easier to taper off.

Here's the downside: with all that clarity comes worry. And the crazy busyness involves us moving out of the present apartment into interim accomodations while his belongings go to the west coast. Who knew they have a hospital rate? We'll stay in them for a month, then fly away from this place. I am going crazy trying to find a short-term place to stay there, as well as an apartment for son to rent. Yesterday I asked a friend there for help, and he has already come through with some ideas. Unlike this place where people smile and say things, but could care less.

Okay, sorry TMI. Just how do you hippies recover alone? With meds to figure out, dressing to change, cooking and eating? At least my son has a personal assistant to do the laundry, and today she vacuumed and mopped! That would be ME!

Son has an appointment with the surgeon Monday. The nurse who took his staples out kindly set it up as we are leaving so soon. Son is worried that there is Leg Length Discrepancy. And there is a hematoma to be aspirated.

Hope you are all doing well, and not bored to death.

Aloha, Soos

Hi Soos:

Sounds like you are very busy indeed. I hope in the middle of all of this you take time to take a deep breath and relax. To much stress to go through at once for sure. Hope that your son feels better soon. I am getting ready to get my second hip replacement on August 12th, will be less than three months after my first. I am looking forward to being over with it and hopefully mending and being able to walk and function normal and without aid. Wishing you both luck and good health....Barb

Hi Soos!

Well ... lots of good news buried in this update so yay!

But you continue to be working at a furious rate ... your poor body and mind will be glad when you can relax a little.

I sure wish I had some west coast contacts who could help.

Thank you for underscoring the 'lessons learned' elements. These will be very useful when I go for anaesthesia consult in September (yes I now have a Sept 20 date).

Good to hear that you are managing although I am sure it is very hard and the heat wave has been brutal.

I am doing well - exercise and walking routines are really paying off and I started taking B12 (suggested by my GP) which is also helping my energy level.

Hang in there woman.

Big, big hugs.

L

Sorry I'm so late in replying, Barbie. The best me time was yesterday, I badly needed a haircut. Had one after my emergency dental visit. So, Barbie - it's a $600+ haircut! I'll need a crown on that molar (it had a really big filling) and whoosh, that was $550!

Ah, so you're a double hippie, too. So many on this forum. Will keep an eye on you here, as that's the day we are set to move.

Luck & health to you, too, Barbie!

YAY, Linda! September 20!!!

Every hip is different - and you've learned so much from the first one, Linda.

The heat! Yesterday I was in downtown and thought I could avoid the streets, but not all of the connecting areas were airconditioned. And some didn't have treated glass - HOT!

I keep telling son those butt squeezes are the most important, and he HATES those!

September 20 we will be on the other coast! But thinking of you!!!

Thanks for your always-positive words, Linda.

Yes , I must admit I managed a little happy dance at my surgeon's office!

And I am determined to ally my lessons learned (and those of several others) with hip #2.

Did you catch the name given to the butt squeezes in the UK (the 50£ squeeze). One is meant to imagine a 50£ note between our cheeks and resist all attempts to remove it! My surgeon also feels the adductors are key to full recovery (so all the variations of leg lift and clam shell exercise).

Wishing you and son a much easier time of it.

With warm hugs,

Aloha, Linda
