I am now 17 weeks post op 49 years. Always walked and ridden horses. so when i came out of hosp went strasight back to walking - built it up slowly but upto mile or so in two weeks - now upto about 4 ish miles - did a 6 mile one yesterday and had to stop the walk towards the end as my right leg was hurting in the middle of the femur - not so much the hip ?
this morningthigh and hip sore but not as bad. Has anyone had this ?
You are so lucky to be able to go any where that far, I am 11 months and 60/70 meters is alli can go without it getting really sore am waiting for referral to orthapaedic consultant physio thinks tendon problem and bursitis.
Pretty amazing distances! I couldn't get anywhere near those distances at 2 weeks or now at 13 weeks. But I am improving. Pain and strength of knees and IT band and hamstrings limit me more than anythin - aside from my other hip (to be done late summer). No real issues with mid- thigh.
But given your level of activity, it sounds as you should get it checked out by PT or doctor.
Wishing you good luck and sympathy - I think most of us feel we should be recovered further, but I admit that I under-estimated the trauma this operation would have (and to be honest, I think surgeons may not be as open about this - perhaps they fear scaring us off).
My husband is now 8 weeks post op and has also worked and built up walking though not quite as far as you. At the end of a walk just over a week ago (we had done a 2 mile walk, stopped for lunch and then walked back) when climbing some steps back to where we were parked he had a sudden pain just under his knee. We iced it when we got home and he rested up a bit. The PT said its not uncommon to get muscle/tendon strains after THA. She told him to still walk but cut back on the distance and to always stretch after a walk. The sore area has gradually improved.
Maybe you have something similar, a pulled muscle or tendon. Hope it gets better and that you can get it checked out by your doctor or PT.
Gosh, you are doing really well. I am 13 weeks today and can probably manage 2-3 miles with a walking stick, without it I think I would struggle with a mile. Nothing wrong in particular, I just don't feel right when I walk. I assume that I have to relearn how to walk after walking a certain way for over a year.
The pain could be caused by over doing the walking, 2 miles extra might be too much in one go. Maybe increase more slowly from 4 to 6 miles.
It's possible you may have done too much at the moment, hopefully it will pass soon.
I also like walking and did too much in the beginning and had pains. Now I seem to be ok. Built it up and did my longest today, 7.6 mile, but I sit down when I can, I usually do between 5/6 mile. My dog has got his waist back too lol. I'm 13 weeks on Wednesday. My inspiration, getting back to the woods, the bluebells are out, deep, purple blue, fantastic.
At my 2-month anniversary I went the day without a crutch. Even went for a 1km wal and then to the shops, only to feel my lower back seizing up and I'm now lying on a hot water bottle instead of cooking supper. Thank goodness for my supportive family!
I'm getting all sorts of odd pains at 18 weeks post revision (28 post THR), lower back (operated side), thigh (operated side), ankle (opposite side), shoulder (opposite side) ......... but the old OA pain is gone.
None of these pains is constant, they vary through the day, but I know how brutal this surgery was, so I suppose we must expect them.
Hi Graham - Isn't this also your body and joints all adjusting ot he new hip, upright posture and new gait? I am definitely feeling of this and more these days.
I hope you have adjusted to being back at work full time. Has the commute gotten any easier - hope so ...
I got very similar pains too at 18 weeks - I was really worried - I could not understand why it would start now??
But a few weeks on they have gone now Rocket. Especially my stem was 'digging' in if I can describe it that way...and all sorts of niggly pains, that didn't require pain killers but were nonetheless disconcerting. All have gone, I can hardly believe my luck. So I am sure yours will disappear too.
I had an appointment organised, as I was worrying a lot in the end, but cancelled it. I wonder if everyone gets something similar at this stage.
Exactly Linda, the commute must be testing you Rocket, and your new hip, it is bound to be a little irritated with all the extra activity. Your body will also be a little more rigid, as you are walking in very busy places and you no doubt be feeling protective, and need to be alert.
My 'stem' if I can call it that, was hurting a lot when I was doing too much. I am 20 weeks or thereabouts. It has gone now, but really was quite painful for a good few weeks around the same time as you, and felt as if it was 'digging' in, and was generally quite painful. Not enough to take pain killers but enough to worry me.
Cut back on your exercise, perhaps alternate using a stationary bike or something else, so you are not pounding too much on your new hip. I love to walk but always limit my walks to 2-3 miles, and I use the bike to do a few more miles, and that way I find I am completely comfortable all day.
Odd that I'm getting non associated pains too - achilles pains have resurfaced.
But you must be right, I am now trying to walk at commuter pace, and cycling too. It does feel good to be doing thesenormal activities, and when cycling I can now use both legs properly whereas before I was only using one leg to get along and 'freewheeling' what is now the operated leg.
I am not getting any 'stem digging in' or anything like that, but then the 'bits' have been implanted for 28 weeks now, so the bone has grown into them OK now. I have been told by my work physio to get up and move every half hour.
