17 with anxiety :(

I have terrible anxiety thats unexplainable, i just started a very small dose of lexapro but i want to learn other ways to cope with it! help please cheesygrin

Hi, Leah. I believe something called Mindfulness can help. My niece is a GP and last year she was suffering from anxiety in the same way as me, and she has since used low dose Mirtazapine and Mindfulness. I am starting the Mindfulness as soon as I can get a Kindle fire sorted. Your GP must be able to explain to you what it is. Best of luck.

There's a great article on mindfulness, and it's "side-effects" in the guardian, essetically it's pro-mindfullness but just warns that it may not be this great, do no harm, treatment that many health professionals are treating it as. You might find it interesting, if you just type "mindfulness side effects guardian" in any search engine it'll probably be the first result, the article is called: "Be mindful of mindfulness: drug-free doesn't mean side-effect free"

Hi Leah, there's all sorts of things you can try... did your GP not suggest anything else? It seems a little strange that you'd just be prescribed meds without a therapy referral of any sort. On the mainstream side you have CBT (which is really great for some people), mindfulness as Ann said, and also the more classical talking psychotherapies/counselling.

There's also a whole host of alternative things for you to try, yoga and breathing techniques/exercises can really help with the physical symptoms but you need to keep at it for a while. I've also heard of "Reiki" which can apparently be really helpful - it's a little weird but I'd love to give it a go myself. And lots more : )

Good luck with everything x
