Hi everyone, sorry this is all going to be very explicit but I'm panicking. After seven years of irregular periods, abnormal hair growth, skin problems and crippling period pains, I was finally referred to a gynaecologist last month and saw him the other day. I was told a few years back that I didn't have PCOS (poly cystic ovaries syndrome) after an abdominal ultrasound that was actually inconclusive because my uterus tilts backwards so the picture wasn't clear, but my doctor said he'd be this life it is PCOS (needless to say I'm pretty frustrated at my doctors over the years... ). He's referred my for another abdo ultrasound but also a vaginal one. Can anyone tell me what to expect or has anyone been here? I'm 18, never had intercourse and never had a pelvic exam, so the idea of even being touched/looked at is terrifying me, plus I'm scared it will hurt. I do use tampons but most women tend to be pregnant by the time they have this done so I get the impression it fees less...invasive?! Would really appreciate some replies if anyone could take the time to reply as I'm very anxious.
This is called a retroverted uterus and can cause pain during menstruation (Flow).. Was told it would right itself in Childbirth. I suffered the same as a young girl..Sound like your Doctor is correct it is (PCOS). Ultrasound is quite harmless as you have already had one so no need to worry about that It might be an idea to get a Vaginal examination and smear tests done to check yourself. It may be a little uncomfortable but wont hurt. You can ask for a specialist Practice Nurse to do it..or a Female Doctor/GP who specialises in Gynae.
It's not that easy, they don't do smears/pelvic exams routinely until you're 23 and when I've asked they've told me no. I've only ever had an abdominal ultrasound before so it's the vaginal one I'm worried about!

I have had more internal exams than I can remember! I don't have children but I am married and have been sexually active for many years. I can understand your nerves but want to erasure you that it will be fine. I would ask for a female if you would prefer that. Also explain your concerns to them, you will be surprised at how friendly they normally are
the probe that they use looks really big but don't worry it doesn't really feel it once inside. It can be a tiny bit uncomfortable and does feel odd but I have never experienced pain. If you do, just tell them to stop. They won't force you to do anything you are uncomfortable with.
also don't feel embarrassed, it's their job and they do many of them.
I am suprised that these smear tests are not done until 23? People can get Cancer of the cervix any time? it should be done from 16 really.. whether sexually active or not.. They give injections for it my daughter had a screen at 15.
I have PCOS and have had the pleasure of having vaginal ultrasounds many times. It's not too invasive, better than a pelvic exam, but a tad uncomfortable and more awkward than anything. I was also told I didn't have PCOS when I was about your age and then 10 years later was finally given a vagianl ultrasound, bloodwork to test the amount of testerone in my system, and a glucose fasting test. Turns out, I had PCOS the whole time. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Good luck.
What country are you in? I'm I'm the uk and a far as I've ever been told it's 23, says so on NHS website too...I've been vaccinated against cervical cancer but never been screened
I live in the UK .. As a lot of girls are sexually active these day the 6 should be screened or at least checked by the GP/Nurse.
