Hi, so basically I'm 19 and I've only ever had 3 periods in my life, I've recently been to the gynecologist and she's put me on the pill for the next 6 months. Just wondering if anyone has been in the same situation with missed periods and been put on the pill and has this worked and if this effects having kids in the future etc. Thank you! :)
I had the exact same problem when I was 18 and I was put on the pill to regulate my periods. I later had my hormone levels tested in my 20s and it turned out I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. Did your gynecologist test your hormone levels before putting you on the pill? It is important to bleed regularly in order to shed your womb lining otherwise you have higher risk of female cancers. But the pill isn’t without side effects and some risks. So when you are on it try and stay as healthy as you can, exercise regularly, eat healthy, don’t smoke and try not to drink too much. The reason I say this is because you can put on weight with the pill much easier, you also can get quite lethargic, depressed and you can get really bad mood swings and PMS. Smoking on the pill puts your risk up of pulmonary emboli and DVT which some women can get.
I took the pill for years and it changed my personality quite a lot, I used to get very angry and impatient and very depressed and anxious. It doesn’t affect everyone like this, but if you or other people notice a big change for the worse, I would say try something else.
Thanks for the info!! Yes my doctor tested my hormone levels and I have a hormone imbalance. Did your periods return to normal after stopping the pill?
I have to be honest, my hormones have always affected me quite badly but were probably worse in my teens and twenties. They will get worse if you become overweight though. You have to be really careful to keep your insulin levels even. My periods have been regular since my late 20s. The best advice I can give is avoid sugar, dairy and too much alcohol try a low GI diet. Exercise regularly and don’t be on the pill for too long because I was and I developed multiple pulmonary emboli. A possibility of another treatment to regulate your hormones is metformin, but if you try it get the slow release tablets. They recommend this if you are trying to get pregnant with PCOS as your risk of a miscarriage is much higher. I am going to try anti androgen tablets next because I am having a lot of symptoms and I can’t take the pill anymore and metformin didn’t agree with me.
