1st Physio appointment

Hi everyone,

went for first physio session this morning and was upgraded/ downgraded from 2 sticks to one stick. They stopped the exercises I was doing and gave me new ones, with a couple specifically designed to help my thigh muscle, and let me raise the leg......rather painful I have to say but anything as long as it works again and doesn't just hang there! She said a couple of weeks of doing them and it should be much improved. I also have a resistance band to work both legs. All in all she was pleased with progress and I have to go again in two weeks. It was a nice little jaunt out in the car, getting in and out was a struggle as the seat is very low, but I put a booster cushion on it and managed. I was surprised to see how much the trees had come on in two weeks, everywhere looking lovely in the sun.

Chocolate was forthcoming from various quarters, muchly was I consoled after yesterday's meltdown.

I am tired tonight, and the leg aches, so have had painkillers. How long is it before the swelling stops roughly please? My ankle on that leg is twice its normal size.

Thanks for all the lovely replies. You are a great bunch of people,

Hi Margaret! Well done! Swelling can last for weeks or month's! I am just over 7 weeks and still bruised! Start hydrotherapy next week! We are all different and heal in different ways! Take it easy! Regards Amanda

Hi Margaret

So glad to hear you'r efeeling better today! Keep it up, xx

Well done you...

And

Jelous you've got physio apps so to tailor the exercises to your progress.

I've only had the exercise sheet...even at post op assessment I asked about physio and was told the sheet was enuf. Grrrr

But they did say swelling for up to 8 weeks was quite usual....

It seems that you are doing really good Margaret - do you like the resistance band?

I am 6+ weeks post-op and still weak in the thigh muscles - what kind of excercises are you doing now ?  I see my Physical Therapist once a week - she comes to my home as I have no way of getting there - hopefully that will change as I am ready (i think) to drive - have not gotten the green light from doctor yet, by therapist told me to go for it ... swelling of my leg didn;t last that long - I was told it could take up to weeks, even months - so don;t worry - it will go away ...  ankle swelling took at least 10 days ....

have a great day and easy does it !!!!

Hi Renee, the exercises were to hold on to something and march up and down on the spot, raising knees as high as possible, starting with 5 repeats and increasing to 30.

Lie flat on bed and keeping leg straight try to raise it from the hip and hold for a count of 5,to start you have to have someone to support at the ankle, and they must never just drop the ankle.

Lie flat on bed, raise knees, then push bottom up into the air and hold for a count of 5.

The last 2 start with 4 repeats at a time, and increase slowly until doing 10.

At the moment I can't get my leg off the bed on my own at all and it's very painful trying too.

as for the elastic band the only problem I have is looping it round something that won't move when I pull on it, and getting it round it in the first place as I don't like leaving it there in case the cats have a chew on it!! Don't think they wouldn't, you would be amazed at what the three year old one has chewed in his life, it includes one of my hearing aids, and I had to confess his sins at the hearing clinic and they fell about laughing!

Mic, have you tried asking your GP to refer you for Physio? Mine was willing to but you may have a bit of a wait, depends on the waiting list where you live.

Good to hear you are feeling better.  Sounds as though you have a good physio there. Best wishes.

Thank you Margaret - I printed it out - seems doable - the lef lifts will be painful for me as well .... but we are getting there ..... don't give up !!!

Hi Margaret

Glad to see you are doing much better. I'm 12 weeks post op & swelling has totally disappeared although if I do too much my knee feels swollen but doesn't look it.

Your exercises are pretty much same as mine & although I couldn't lift my leg at first, when I went back after 2 weeks I could do it quite easily although still a bit painful.

I had to laugh about your cat, I have 4 ragdolls & they will chew anything. Papers & magazines have to be hidden or they will be shredded!

I wanted a rag doll when I was looking for my two, but then saw an article about Asians which said they were very affectionate and excellent for OAP's so went for them. I have a chocolate Tiffanie girl and a chocolate Burmilla boy. Never had a cat like him for pure devilment!
