1st Physio Session

Hi everyone, just back from my 1st Physio session (3 weeks today post-op) & they were really pleased with my progress & as long as I practice my walking gait, I can ditch the crutches! I've bought myself some trekking poles ready for when I start building up some distance. I've got to practice not waddling like a penguin!

Good luck Fernlady....oh I definitely know what you mean about the waddling...Unfortunately for me I don't think that is going to go all the way away until after my other hip replacement. Keep up the good work, you are doing great....Barb

Hi

wrll done on your progress so far. I had the dreaded waddle too and the physios were useless. What they didn't tell me is that the waddle is caused by no strength in the gluteus minimum and mediums - which hold the hip in place. The waddle will not go at all unless these are strong. One fab exercise I found to do was sideways hip abduction - so lay on the bed on your good side with legs straight and then abduct or lift your bad leg up ( same way as if you were standing and bringing your leg out to the side)

it's very hard to start with- I did x3 sets of 10 three times a day and took 3 weeks for the waddle to go. Standing on one leg helps too.

good luck

Hi Fernlady,

my husband has bought me some tracking poles for when I am walking without sticks. With the same view to establishing a normal gait and extending my walking distance. He is an optimist it is only day 8!

However I think it is an excellent idea, and look forward to using them. I think they will also give us a bit of extra confidence. Go you!

Well done on your progress it is always good to have some professional feedback. Particularly if it is positive. X

Thanks Gilly, I can't lie on my side yet but will definitely remember this one x

Great news there, so glad you are progressing well.

I was waddling for ages, but it does disappear ... eventually.

I've just been to the local park with my dog & used the trekking poles for the 1st time - wow, what a difference to the crutches! My legs & bum ache but the physio said this would happen as I'm using muscles I haven't used properly for ages x
