Hi everyone,
i had my left hip replaced 2 weeks ago, recovery has been good apart from awful pain in my knee which radiates down to my foot.
it is this pain (not my hip area) that is stopping me from sleeping! i cannot lie comfortably with it, i can’t keep it still.
could this be a nerve issue? i am hoping it will settle down but it is not getting any better.
i now dread going to bed, anybody else had a similar issue?
thanks
Helen
Hey Helen,
sry for your pain. I just had something similar. After the surgery my knee was hurting on the outside, going down the calf. My Dr. said it was the T-band muscle. I exercised it and messaged it & it’s feeling better than it was. I just started it yesterday. The pain was intense, it actually starts from the lower back. Talk to your Dr about the T-band muscle and see if that helps you.
All the best…
ive had a very similar pain im seein my dr on friday hopefully get some answers .
General recovery from op ok but have some other pains instead of that i didnt have before
I also have pain on the outer part above the knee on the same leg as my hip replacement, which has been quite concerning. The last thing I want after getting over a THR is a knee replacement! I’d never heard of the IT band but if you do a google search, there does seem to be a correlation between a THR and IT band issues.
Probably a silly question - but are you keeping up with your painkillers? Codeine etc?
Your knee is man-handled during hip replacement so some pain is to be expected.
Joan
thank you for your replies, i will Google the band muscle and hope i find exercises that will help.
thanks again, Helen
Hi Helen i had exactly the same kind of pain after the hip op. I’m now at the 12 week marker and that pain and several other muscular ailments have resolved themselves. One thing I learnt early on, was not to overdo the exercise. first the body has to heal and later will be time enough for strengthening. good luck.
sounds very good advice made me feel better the hip pain has gone just been swapped by other pain . I have other ailments to contend with Rhumatoid arthritus and fybramyalgia which seems to be reacting
Hi Helen, I too had the knee pain and also a shin splint like pain down front of shin. I was advised it most likely caused by now trying to walk correctly after months of over compensation whilst limping. Once I had my gait correct and was walking farther, the pain totally disappeared. Try doing most of your stretching exercise whilst still in bed, this will stop the sudden stiffness when you first get up. I also used a microwave rice heat bean bag that I lay over wherever pain was worse and that was a godsend! Hope it soon passes
Helen
thanks again, think i will ease up on the exercises, i have been doing alot as i thought i was doing the right thing. I’ll let myself heal first and do them more gently.
Helen

hi Helen:
I’m 1 year post op..I had the same knee pain..it was explained to me that during surgery they hold the knee pretty tight to break the femur from the socket..the pain went away by 4 weeks for me..
connie
.
agree re not to over do the exercises too early. altho all the info booklet said to do each exercise 10 repeats 3-5 times a day the physio told me start with 3 repeats 3 times a day ( as I told her I’d done one of the exercises 10 x and she said that was far too much to start with - for me anyway ) and gradually build it up. it took me a good 5 weeks before I could do it 10 repeats 5 x a day. otherwise the muscles just tense up too much. good luck ![]()
