2 weeks post op

It's now 2 weeks since op, had staples removed ouch it hurt and I cried. Walking unaided around house and 1 stick outside. Do all hospitals recommend wearing compression stockings for 6 weeks or do they vary depending where you live?

Glyn

Hi glyn. I only had to keep compression stockings on for first two weeks. Sounds like you are doing really well. Keep up good work

Hi , it depends on the surgeon I was suppose to wear them for 6 weeks and managed 5 . You are doing well  I was about 4 weeks before unaided in house .

Dont do too much too quickly .

Perhaps it was your nurse . I didn't feel more than a slight sting when my staples came out .

Hi Linda

I had to wear them for six weeks and removed them finally with the help of a glass of wine to celebrate. I too the view theough all the pot op that if they do something, you did it !! My recovery has been superb

Don't rush and all will be well

Hi Glyn. I was told to wear them for 6 weeks but a different surgeon at the same hospital doesn't use them at all. I'm 5 weeks post op now & can't wait to get rid of them but If they help prevent DVT then I'm gonna do as I'm told. I'm still using 1 crutch so you're doing really well!

I wasn't given any at all.  After the surgery I had ankle pumps on for 24 hours.  Then was told to do the ankle pump exercises every day as many times as I could during the day and rest for an hour on the bed every day.  I think it depends in what area you live.  I am in Devon.  I was also given dispersible aspirin to take for 6 weeks when I came home.

Thanks

It's good to get different opinions, it seems to vary so much.

My leg is so badly bruised especially back of my operated leg, the tightness of stocking really hurts or perhaps I am just a wimp.

Yes I think it I was unlucky with the nurse who removed the staples as most people seem to agree like you that it feels like a sting. But 34 staples and everyone of them hurt. I bought a big bag of revels for treat afterwards.

When I get to 6 weeks and get the all clear from consultant I too will treat myself to a couple of glasses of wine. Glad you had great recovery I hope I am the same

Yes I will do as I am told and suffer these dreadful stockings, like you say if it prevents DVT then I will do it

What are ankle pumps? Sorry for my ignorance.

You deserved it . Was it one Revel for each staple .

By the way your a show off I only had 26 .ha ha

I stuck them out till a couple of days before check up . They didn't even notice I didn't have them on . Think that if you are mobile you don't need them on so long but we are good girls and did as we're told

Ankle pumps are a plugged in contraption fitted on calves which contract and release when you are in bed . Don't worry they don't hurt . To prevent DVT

Hi Glyn,

like Barbara I'm in Deon, UK too, and again did NOT get any advice on compression stockings. As B said, I also got cute auto ankle pumps for the first overnight post op at hospital, but that's all. Yes, advice seems inconsistent, but is caring, and seems to say be careful, tho in different words and actions!

Lucky no staples at Exeter, but dressing removed yesteday by District nurse and permission to shower - excellent news.

Glyn, I was 'done' on Fri 27 Feb, same day as you? Almost two weeks post op now. Go well, stay, well

Sounds a good idea, better than these tight stockings for 6 weeks

Lovely feeling getting stitches and dressing removed isn't it.

Hope you make a good recovery. Good luck.

No you are not a wimp. I had bad bruising round thigh and knee and was told to stop blood thinning tabs as my wound was also weeping and the tablets were the cause. Weeping stopped and bruising slowly went down. Best to follow whatever your health care team advise but if stockings uncomfortable, speak to them and see what they can suggest.

By the way I too had 34 staples!

Hi Glyn!

I'm here in the US and my doctor said I won't need to wear the stockings becaue I'll have ankle pumps on for the first few days.
