20 steps outside!

Hi...at 3 week post op mark today...progress steady...

Walked to local library. On way home lifted crutch to sky and wobbled 15 steps without. New milestone! Then came home and sat on bed without using hands to help me down.

Yes tired, yes felt good!

Hi I'm day 19 today and had my first formal physio session. Really useful gave me some more challenging exercise and encouraged me to walk inside without crutches. I haven't had any visible swelling and am down to minimal pain relief. Also sitting without using hands and without sticking leg out in front. Physio also said that as I was used to regular exercise I can start gently building up to what I used to do. Feel so much better for moving about and stretching etc. I am also resting when I need to. Good luck with your progress

Well done you, that's quite a milestone.

Well done Mic but be careful!! Been there, done it, got the tee shirt AND the regrets. With hindsight I can say we all think "aren't I great" but all we are asked to do and NEED to do is the exercises! What we do early on, with only one crutch is more for our own ego than physical improvement. All the best, Horseyhorsey.

I'm not so convinced that lifting the crutch to the sky is a good idea.  There seems to be a lot of people on here that think it's a good idea to walk without aide as soon as they can.  I personally believe we need that aide until we don't need it, and rushing it can only cause a possible fall, or undue stress on healing muscles.  As much as I wanted to be a "star" healer, with no problems, I learned very quickly that I had a lot of problems to overcome, and my walker never left my side for many weeks, and I still need my cane.

I'm with youSam.

I think it's an individual thing. Today was my first formal physio session and he actively encouraged me to be crutch free indoors only. I'm not star healer I've had lots of setbacks but I do think you have to push yourself a little more each day. Today was a good day

I really think it has more to do with how long after surgery it's safe to go without a cane or walker.  We have to remember that the femur bone was cut, and then drilled out to be hollow so the shaft of the implant can be inserted.  There isn't a lot of bone left to support the body.  Combine that, with the fact that the muscles are also cut and they are not able to function at 100%, so there isn't much holding that leg and all the weight up.  That femur can very easily snap in two from the body weight, since it no longer has the full support of the muscles, until they heal.  That's the whole purpose of having a crutch, cane, or walker....to take the weight off the leg until it heals.

Funily enough the physio today said the exact opposite. That the whole leg was strong enough to support my whole weight half an hour after the end of surgery. He said no crutch indoors and one outside and none after six weeks. The only way cut muscles will heal is to work them - gently

Hi All,

Tis funny, different medical expert advice and also we are all very different in our healing process.

Yes, I did feel good at exactly three weeks crossing the room to the TV without a crutch, and taking a few outside steps. I crave the physicallity of exercise, normally gym and swim weekly and walk at weekends, which I know is good for my healing and want to get there with new hip in small steps to fitness - as long as I dont overdo things. I really appreciate the 'take it slow but sure' messages too!

I think I will be able, as requested, to hand in crutches at six weeks. But, I get pain n stiffness and seizing up if I sit for 30 mins in one chair, and still cant do leg raises from bed, so tis a varied picture.

Wish I had a physio appt before eight weeks post op, but thats when my appt is.

Good luck all

Mic

once again i pulled the `teacher card` when offered first physio appt after start of summer term and had my first appt today - i am possibly lucky thay in my bprough there are 3 different places to be referred to and this one is the furthest from my house but only about 25 mins in the car - my 2nd appt is in 2 weeks time

U have a great attitude. And that's 50% of the healing process.

3x THR

Fantastic!!!  Good for you!!!  Make sure not to over do it!!  Ginn USA NJ

I agree whole heartedly with this.  Im nearly 5 weeks post op in with LTHR on one crutch in home but still 2 outside, its been cold this does not help the joints at all.  Yesterday I had a very bad pain in my left buttock wondered what on earth I had done my husband was with me i was just going to sit down, he said that it could be that all of the initial analgesia is wearing off bit by bit I have to say the numbness isnt so numb anymore and I am getting shooting pains sometimes which I never had at the start.  I do suffer with fibromyalgia also but this was different.  Today however its not there anymore.  I think because all we have to do is sit and think any little niggle is 100% worse than it would normally be.

very cool!  Each milestone will feel like a huge weight has been lifted....

I did the same.... I had both hips at the same time -- the surgeon said when I came back in 6 six weeks he still wanted me on two canes or the walker... at about 4 weeks I felt strong and would take a few steps but always heard his voice in the back of my mind

When I did go back, he was pleased with the progress... as much as I wanted to get rid of the canes, I do agree, in this instance it is better to be sure the bone had healed...

I just survived my first week back at work, was tried by the end of the week, but no pain ---
