20wks and still problems

Hi

I'm 20 weeks post TKR this week.

Walking fine - usually at least 5km a day. Driving is fine. Stairs are uncomfortable going down but ok.

Sleeping ok some stiffness on standing and first thing in the morning and very little swelling

but, i still have a problem with straightening fully. - I'm about 2 degrees and have a lot of tightness and discomfort just above the to of the knee.

Had anyone else had this tightness last this long and is it too late to achive zero degrees in the straight leg?

seeing surgeon mid April - but keen to know what others have experienced

Hi

i am 16 weeks snd was wondering about tightness. It seems to have got worse, not better.  It feels that when I bend my leg the top is so tight it wants to split open.  Yesterday I ached down the side right into the ankle.  I can walk up stairs but down still a problem so I feel very self conscious when I out shopping in a mall.  These are still trying times, let's hooe they get better.

Hard to keep smiling isn't it!

I had one really good day about 3 weeks ago when i actually forgot about it for a while and now it's all back again. Nothing compared to the early days but still annoying! The calf of my op. Leg is also thinner than the other one! I hope that changes!!

I know what you mean.  Looking at both legs yesterday and the operated knee is completely different. Some days you feel really good agout everything and the next...well that is another story....still don't  feel that I have done the right thing but remain optimistic.   As you say, keep smiling!

I walk up the stairs with no knee pain and think it's great that i had it done! Go to get out of a chair and wonder why i bothered!

I guess we have to be patient. Good luck with your progress

Yes that is it exactly!  Sometimes I don't want to get out of the chair as I know what's coming. Wonder if its psychological?

Hi Suzi,

I am 7 months now & still have tightness above my knee, some days worse than others, but I still keep on exercising, it seems to help, also each time I go to physio for intense massage it feels a lot better.

You mention getting zero degree bend, well, mine is zero now, but it took the physio a while to get it there, so honestly, I'm sure you'll get there.

My bend is not yet what I want but my surgeon say's to keep up with the exercising & physio & I'll get there in the end, it's only about 115 & I want at least 135.

I think we all heal differently, but we get therre eventually.

Lynn

Hi Suzi

I am 20 weeks post op on Friday and get the same, stiff first thing, I still get the elastic band feeling round the knee, mainly when just standing for a while, also in the hot water in the spa (37 degrees C). I can do stairs well, up and down.

I have full straight leg and although my surgeon said not to try and push it any further at 135 degrees when I saw him at 12 weeks, I had a measure today and it is nearly 155 degrees and that is just where it has ended up I have not tried to get it any further.

My surgeon said at 3 months that he would see me again at 3 years so it will be interesting what yours says to you.

Regards Paul down under in Perth.

I've not been told what degree my knee is at when straightened, very interesting. My PT always put a fist under my knee and had me straighten from that perspective. When he wasn't around, I rolled up a towel and put it under my knee to acheive the same height. I don't think it's ever too late, just more of a challenge...I hope that's right, because I'm still working on my range of motion. As others have said, there is still tightness and I do remember thinking bending was going to make my skin burst back open. I have tried putting oils on the scar, thinking it was the scar that was tight, but now I'm wondering about it being something under the skin. I just know that in 6, 12 or 24 months it will all feel normal. I remind myself that it didn't get bad overnight and it obviously isn't going to get perfect overnight.

Do you think a deep tissue massage would help with the tightness please?

Thanks Lynn good to know i have room for improvement

Thanks to you all for your kind and encouraging words. Good to know i can still hope to improve

Hi I am 18 weeks post TKR and have just found this group.

My major concern is the straightening of the leg.

I am having Physio and down to 4 degrees and am concerned it  will improve?

I also find the knee very tight and some discomfort in bed which I hope will improve?
