25 with hyperthyroid.. Please help

Hi.. Ive recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.. Ive just turned 25.

Sitting having a chat with my mum then bam.. After having a horrible sensation in my neck, feeling like i couldnt breathe, having flashing lights in my head and my heart rate reaching 190+ bpm i was diagnosed first with vegus nerve damage then corrected to hyperthyroidism.

This was about 3 weeks ago now and 5months after becoming a new mum.

My GP and hospitals have really been letting me down.

I have been given 80mg propranolol as well as iron tablets as they found out i was anemic at the same time.

I have for the past 3weeks been feeling a very uncomfortable tightish suffolkating feeling in my neck.. All day every day. Its scary.

I had overactive thyroid diagnosed after I had my son, I think it's due to all the changes your body goes trough during pregnancy and labour. I too had the sensation of something in my throat, I don't have a goitre but my consultant said some feel this with the thyroid gland. The sensation did go away but it took awhile. At my hospital they have a specialist endocrinology centre, with a direct number to the endocrinology nurses. If you have something similar I would call and speak to someone, or if you're under the consultant still try his secretary's number that's another way you could try and find someone to speak to. I hope you feel better soon and this gives you some reassurance.

You are very young Graves disease seems to lie domant and appear after a birth or a shock my mum devloped it after my brother was born she was early forties I developed it after an accident also in my early forties, only another person who has  an over acitive thyroid knows what you are going through. Most GPs do not know enough about the disease and rely on text books. My mum had  most of her thyroid removed I had radiation treatment as we were both considered past child bearing age. I take it you saw an Endocrinologist  perhaps they are waiting to see if your thyroid will start working again as you are so young and possibly will want more children. Make sure you see your Doctor have regular blood tests, my sister or husband used to come with me  to appointments as I wasnt always thinking straight and couldnt take everything in. You must be feeling very tired especially with a lovely  new baby to care for. Keep an eye on your weight I went down to 5 stones and this has caused me to have weak bones and breathing problems. I have posted on here before if you read my posts you will see the problems I have had, but we are not all the same and our symtoms are varied. Forget the house work try to sleep when the baby does and accept help any help that is offered, I felt guilty and kept saying I am fine i will manage. I hope all goes well for you. Love Jacky

Have you been put on any anti-thyroid meds? If not, ask your doctor if you can be put on carbimazole. Propranolol only helps with the symptoms of hyperthyroidism and does not help the disease. You need a drug such as carbimazole to stop your thyroid from over producing thyroxin. I couldn't take propranolol because it made me even more exhausted and nauseous.
