I am into my 5th day on 20mg of citalopram and my symptoms have got worse. I assume reading some of the comments that this is a normal side effect but I am finding it difficult so I am going back to my doctor. I think what I am really looking for is support from other sufferers that it is all worthwhile. 5yrs ago I was on another drug that seemed to have less side effects but my doctor told me that citalopram would be much better but I am finding this hard to be believe, have I given it enough time yet.
Thanks
Keith
Hi Keith
Unless the side effects are intolerable, I think you have to give the drug a bit more time. It can take a few weeks before you start to feel the benefits of Citalopram (or any other AD drug). And yes, it is quite common to feel worse before you get better with this type of medication - particularly feeling anxious.
You say that you've been on Citalopram for five days and I'm assuming your doctor has asked to see you in a week or so to see how you are getting on? By that time, hopefully any side effects will be reducing or gone as your body adjusts to the medication, but do tell your doctor if not. Be candid with him about your concerns as there will be other drugs to try, albeit you do have to give them a fair crack to see if they work for you. Unfortunately, these drugs are not an exact science as well I know!! What works for one person may not do so for another.
Take care and let us know how you get on.
Best regards.
I was told that it would take 2 weeks for citalopram to get into my system so I'm going back to my Doctor after that and she is doing a review. I think it takes up to two weeks for everyone because it's in the medication leaflet. I hope you feel better soon. How much mg u on at the moment?
Hi there
I could tell you how bad citalopram is and how bad the side effects are but that would be my own experience.
I could tell you how anxious it makes me feel or how depressed I have become since taking this drug but would it really help you?
7 weeks into citalopram and I was feeliong like death warmed up.
I couldnt function as a human
If you feel this way go back to your GP and ask for a different AD. He/she has many to choose from.
Good luck
