2nd hip replacement

Had first hip replacement last November now due to go in hospital on Friday for 2nd hip replacement, getting nervous. Anybody else have 2nd so close and is it the same procedure. Many thanks xx

Hi Diane, I had my first on 30thJune and my second will be in Jan. That's just what my consultant thinks is a reasonable gap. There are some lovely people on here who have just had a couple of months between.

I am having my 6 wk check on Monday and will try to push for a quicker date as I have recovered quickly and I am wonky on my un-operated side!

Hi Diane,

I had my first one done on the 15th of May, the next is scheduled for August 27th.

I was nervous, anxious and whatnot for the first, but now... I have to admit I can barely wait. So, no I'm not nervous, but I am antsy to get going and be done and finally get to convalescing all the way, since now the bad hip is blocking my progress in the 'good hip' (operated one).

As for the procedure, it should be the same.

I'll have the same surgeon performing the second one as well, so I'm positive in my case that the procedure will be identical. But since the procedure is more or less standard these days, even another surgeon should not be a problem.

The hospital I go to though just hooks patients to one surgeon for life as it were. Sort of assurance that you always have a familiar face and never have to re-tell your story and so on. The assistants however in my case will vary as the hospital is part of a university as well, so many co-assistants in training along with the 'real doctors'.

Hi Diane,

I had my first thr last november, and the 2nd 2 weeks ago, both opps done at the same hospital by the same surgeon, everything went fine, this one seems to be healing great, the first I think was hampered by the fact that my other hip was just as bad so i tended to put all the strain on my new joint, this time all good, hardly any after opp pain, just a bit of stiffness, so good luck, you will be fine, hope to hear from you soon,

Love

Lynne x

Oh thanks Lynne, I like the whole 'this one seems to be healing great', makes me even more eager to get it done

First hip went well (really well) the first weeks, but now it's a bit of a stalemate where I can't improve on the hip much if anything because of the bad one.

Like you, too much strain on the now good one doesn't promote the healing, so hopefully I'll, like you, go easier once the other is done!

I am getting a MRI on my second hip on Saturday to see if it can be repaired or replaced. But I have been told it's not half as bad as the first. So think positive and you will see you will be back on your feet in no time. It should be you telling me ha ha. Take care hope all goes well.

Thanks all to replies not feeling to bad now same hospital and surgeon as last time do everything should go well.will keep in touch after op.

Hi Diane,

I had my first one done on 26 Feb - in tomorrow for the other one-Same hospital and consultant, who says he has done hips a week apart before. We agreed the second one needing to be done at my seven week check up but had to go back through gp referral. Not particularly looking forward to tomorrow - but know this awful pain will go. Last time by about 5 weeks my new hip was doing great, but I was being held back by the pain in the other one. X

As I've commented on other threads, I've had 4 in total. Last two 6 months apart, because developed blood clot on lung after earlier one and was on warfarin.

In my experience, no 2 operations are the same. I've learned to take things as they come and not compare and contrast - with myself or with others.

Good luck.

Hi Diane,

I had my first op on 25th Feb and am having my second hip done on 25th August. Exactly 6 months apart. I have no pain from the first hip so am looking forward to being pain free but still a little apprehensive as no two ops are the same. I'm having the same, wonderful consultant so am full of confidence.

I look forward to hearing your posts on your wonderful recovery.

Take care

Ali xx
