Please can anyone give me some advice.
I am having my second hip replacement left on Thursday I had my right hip replaced October 2017.
At the moment I am having a real problem with constipation due to high dose cocodamol. Can anybody give me advice on how to b get my bowels going before my op I have tried senna movicol and the doctor has prescribed lactulose I have also tried bicarbonate of soda I would appreciate any advice
Susan
Had the same problem when I had my first hip done. I used prunes and dried apricots ate a handful everyday . I did use a mild laxative when it was real bad but once I eat the fruit everyday it helped a lot. Good luck on your second hip I need to get my other hip done too.
What has worked for me is to take a dose of stool softener with every single dose of pain meds.
Good luck, both with surgery and constipation.
Hi Susan
I had the constipation problem after my surgery due to the high levels of opiates given for pain relief in the 2 days immediately post op. In fact it almost prevented me being discharged as the nurses were concerned that I should have a bowel movement before they would let me go home.
Eventually they relented and gave me an additional laxative to take along with the senna already provided. The laxative was sodium docusate (DulcoEase) taken twice daily (200mg) as well as 15mg of senna last thing at night.
That combo got me going within 24hrs so it may be worth a shot.
Many thanksfor your kind advice
Lots of good advice here, keeping yourself fully hydrated helps soften stools, perhaps that might help too?
I use Magnesium for this and it works great although when I was taking the narcotics right after surgery I had to resort to Dr. Schultze intestinal cleanse to get things going. It works great. Try the magnesium first.
Prune juice every day works wonders!
Hi I had mine done on the 13th October must admit I haven't taken the codeine for a few weeks....stopped taking anything....but have started recently taking 200mg ibuprofen and 500mg of paracetamol in the morning which really helps but ibuprofen upsets your stomach...I think it's unusual to still be taking codeine after 3 months....but when Indid take it I had senakot the exra strength and it worked fine for me...drink plenty of water.....good luck....think I will need the other side done as well...
First week after my THR and taking pain meds, I took Miralax daily. It helped with the constipation. I also ate a few prunes.
Dear Susan,
Have you tried a good old fashion enema? I would talk to the Dr about this now, you don't want to be backed up before going into surgery. Perhaps the Dr can give you sound advice. Best of luck to you with everything! xo
Susan prune juice, and yogurt or even oat meal, all have a great effect on this. Good luck and water!!!!
Metamucil worked well for me...
When I was on codeine I ate a lot of veg, also prunes, dates, linseed. All the best
Hi, Susan--
My doctor advised me to take Miralax daily as soon as I started taking opiods. (It's an osmotic laxative that draws water into the intestines...works slowly.) Also took a psyllium fiber supplement (Metamucil), if I wasn't eating a great deal of fruit. The main point I got--that I had not properly understood-- is that since opiods do slow intestinal processes, it's part of your medical regime to have a systematic plan--which laxative remedies to take and a time schedule to use them in relation to your other medication, in the same way you would any other regular medication. As KarmaMama said, a stool softener with every pill....
