2nd park run 5 weeks post op

Well 2nd park run 5 weeks after surgery was definitely better than last weeks . I managed to do gentle run for the full 5k and no issues so far .I know for some it goes against the grain but I feel good about it and it was my main reason for getting surgery so I could get rid of pain and keep running . Mind you I started work again today and carrying a rucksack around London and up and down quite a few flights of stairs was no joke and i am a bit tender tonight .

Well done ! It’s awesome that you’ve completed a couple.of park runs so soon!. I’m focusing on all the positive posts!
I have my THR in 5 weeks and I’m desperate tk get back to the gym!.

Hope you’re not too sore tomorrow..

Deb

Your result is amazing.I guess you are youngish ? Did you have the anterior procedure ? I want to get back tennis but i feel like it will be 3 months. I’m fine but there are still some odd feelings at week 7 . I am a bit ancient of course.

Hi John /Jen

I’m 52 and had posterior approach via spinal injection in UK . I have been really pleased with progress . from day one when I went to see my surgeon he asked me my expectations and I said I wanted to run again after surgery . he didn’t bat an eye and said no problem which seems to be at odds with what a lot of people on here have been advised. remember that online advice may be based on people who may never have run in their lives and nearing 70 or dare I say it well overweight so of course they have been told not to run or play tennis etc . I had bit between teeth and positive attitude which helps . my advise for anyone is to get fit before surgery as it will help muscles knit back quicker. I was running right up until day before surgery I know that is easier said than done . My main issue was pain at night and leg wanting to go from below me when running .

Park run news good. My surgeon said only limit was no bunje jumps!

Keep on trecking, the operation was designed not to put you in arm chair, but in nature, gentle sweat, and body running.
Enjoy!

I will definitely stick to no bunje jumps most other things still on the cards !

Why do so many people have this miracle op, and then sit on bums and still use a cane.
Viva parkrun!

hi keith. I love reading your posts. they give hope to those who want it. shows were all different.

I don’t want to be still using a crutch at 2 months post op…I have no choice on the matter…I have been told !!!.. we are all different !!!
Think before you comment please !!!

Good morning Helen,

Hope your recovery is going as well as it can.

Of course we are all different, my Parkrun was at 5 months and not 5 weeks for example.

You sound like you are making all efforts to get well soon. My argument is not with you, and sorry if it seems so, but with people i’ve met at the 6 week check up who havn’t bothered to exercise, eat loads of junk food, and generally expect healing by magic!
Warm wishes
Mic

Hi KeithMcC,

Well done on your very quick recovery, the only thing my surgeon would guarantee was I would be out of pain and he delivered that, no pain since op, no need for painkillers, I was annoyed the nurses kept insisting on taking them.

Totally agree with you regarding exercise, I have always exercised and believe it is the best pain killer especially after op. I did take recovery slowly after op as I did not want to risk dislocation. It was 5.5 months before I returned to the gym for pilates, strep aerobics then added zumba.

Keep on running but stay safe.

Zumba, what a lovely idea for recovery!

Do you know people who do that? The people I have come across seem only too keen to start moving again!

Hi Ian,
Understood… thank you..

All

many thanks for the encouragement and it is good to see . I do get Mic’s point in that there is a perception that people take longer to recover or that everyone tells them to take it easy and they do to an extent and dont push too hard . This starts from the surgeons to the physio to google and the horror stories. I’ve put on 3lb with less activity and I tell you that’s coming off lol. Day 2 at work and gees walking around London the tubes stairs and trains is a chore .

My guy in Naples Fl refuses to put any limits or restrictions at any stage. He has a lot of confidence in the anterior thing which he pioneered long time ago. He hasn’t had a complication in the last nine years. He does up to nine a day. On the other hand the rehab people were more cautious,. Several falls on the tennis court were what finished off my right hip, so for the moment I am trying hard to avoid that happening again, but I can walk two miles in hilly terrain with no problems.

John

it is good to hear positivity . I think it’s the same as food ,everything in moderation.

Deb,

I had a posterior right THR 2 weeks ago (20/08), and can say that if you are fit and healthy before, it makes an enormous difference after.
I was back in the gym 11 days later.. Ok, so I used the lift in the gym and I did keep my crutches close.. and this was to sit on an upright bike for 25 minutes and do the physio exercises I was recommended.
I’m used to hitting the gym 4 times a week, so like you was desperate to get back..
I did have a great surgeon, but Im sure that most employ the accelerated rehab methods these days.
My top tip if you can to it.. If you have a stationary bike in the house, use it as soon as you get home, or rent one, I did for about £20 a week. Not a spin bike or Peleton mind, one of the old school LifeFitness ones. This helps so much in the morning, use it on the lowest level ( only if you can and your post op physiotherapist recommends this) for 10 minutes and it loosens up everything.
I also found a pilates ring super useful for getting the hip flexor back to work. Think this was £15 on Amazon.

Thank you!! This is so encouraging! I did post a new discussion “Realistic expectations” about getting back to work and pretty much every response has warmed me about being too eager!! I’m hoping that a positive mental attitude (aka sheer bloody mindedness!) will count for a lot!! That said, of course, I’ll be careful!

Deb

I replied on that one too…
