2nd THR now scheduled for 22nd September - time to stop sulking

A couple of months ago, I posted that I was disappointed to report that I needed a 2nd THR and was in the process of having a major sulk at the time.  I received lots of support and understanding, for which I thank everyone who replied.

I haven't been sulking for 2 months - honest - but I have been dreading receiving 'that envelope', which duly arrived this week.

'That envelope' also gave me the date for my pre-op - next week, in fact.  I was a little surprised about this as by my calculations its 5 weeks in advance of the op.

Has anyone else had their pre-op so far in advance?

Yes I have I had mine march 2nd had op June 28 after the op was cancelled in may this was my second hip replacement I had the first 12 months ago the joy of being pain free is fantastic

Hi Cloe. My pre op was 11 weeks before my op. I was MRSA positive and had immediate treatment and three clear swabs. I fully expected another pre op or at least a MRSA retest before op but they said there was no need.

pre op usually few weeks before as if any health issues ie anaemia high BP etc found they have some time to sort it before your day of surgery so I don't get cancelled on day .

  and there it is !!!!

5 weeks is not that much in advance Chloe - make sure you have your teeth checked and cleaned ( a tooth was pulled and had to wait at least 4 weeks just in case ...)

Pre-op for 2nd hip surgery I asked to be excused from the presentation portion of the afternoon - so I just had the meeting with Phamacy, Anesthesist, admitting and after care ...

you know you can come here any time, right ?  I did because I was freaking out and threw fits etc .. no place better than here to feel loved, understood and supported ...

big warm hug

I was told that the operation should take place within twelve weeks of the pre op and if it did not you would need the pre op again.

I wondered if it was a long time because last year my pre-op was only 2.5 weeks before my op, so I assumed that the shorter time frame was correct.

Of course it makes more sense to have a longer gap, so that if any infection is found it can be treated in the weeks before the op.

I have regular dental check ups, so I'm pretty confident that my teeth are ok.

Re Joint School - unless anything has changed since last year, I will also miss it - doesn't seem much point in going for a repeat performance!

I know what you mean - the thought of eventually being pain free is the only thing that is stopping me from becoming a gibbering wreck.

Wow did you have any symptoms or was the diagnosis a complete surprise?

Gosh don't sulk

I would just love to have a date I need both my hips replacing the pain is unbearable and every day I pray the postman will bring me my letter I just hope it will be soon so that I can get my life back and plan for the future.

Susan

Hi Susan - I'm not sulking now, I threw a hissy fit a couple of months ago because I had hoped to be able to delay the need for a second op for at least another year.  However on the advice of my surgeon I have to accept that I need the operation this year.

Now, I'm simply resigned to the fact that I won't be getting a miracle any time soon and had better have the op instead.

How long have you been waiting?

Apparently the op is now up to twelve weeks after the pre op. If it does not happen in that time you need another pre op. I thought it used to be six weeks and it has changed although I may be wrong.

Another thing Chloe ...

I was told to NOT compare the surgeries - of course I did, and honestly, they were different -

I thought 2nd one was more painful (not to turn you off) but surgeon told me that I just had forgotten the level of pain I was in then... there will be more of these comparisons -

on the other hand, I felt so much more confident - less fearful of dislocating the hip and less akward sitting down on toilet and having toiletpaper in place (important) -

Morning Renee

Yes I had read that you shouldn't compare the 2 operations are they are likely to be different.  In my opinion that it is a ridiculous statement - of course you're going to compare the 2!

I already feel more confident in my ability to deal with aftermath of the operation as I have already been-there-done-that .  I remember what caused me issues last time and have come up with ways to deal with them.

I had my second hip replacement  7 weeks ago . after the first I felt great even though the leg felt like it belonged to some one else  although I had muscle pain nothing to really complain about.  The second one was done by different surgeon and I was moving and recovering even quicker than the first may be because I knew what to expect second time round I was expecting much of the same but the recovery this time seems to be a lot quicker maybe it's because there isn't that horrid pain we all have before the op

Chloe

Yes I had my pre op in May for an op in July. The pre op is valid for 3 months so 5 weeks ahead is fine.

I think there is some sense in doing it well in advance as if they find any issues (blood pressure or heart for instance) they have time to sort them out.

Hope it all goes well

Mike
