2nd THR - very different experience?

Hello all, I’m 5 days post op TLHR and having a very different experience than my TRHR which was done at the end of March 17. My right replacement went very smooth, virtually pain free, using 1 crutch after 3 weeks and returning to work full time at 6 weeks. I’m 5 days post op left and really struggling.  My whole leg is completely swollen I have a burning sensation when I move and my leg is extremely stiff. I suppose I was extremely lucky the first time round but can anyone reassure me that this is normal? I am managing the pain on constant meds but just wondering why this time round is so very different? Any help would be greatly appreciated x

Like children, they're all individual.  It is very common for a second THR to ve a very different experience to the first one .... sometimes better , sometimes worse.

Go and see your GP, get it checked out at this early stage.

Hope it’s ok

I'm starting week seven on rthr posterior. I was great until day 8 when according to everyone I had a bleed. My leg swelled huge!! They tested me for blood clot and nothing. The day before I barely needed walker , now wheel chair only! It took a week of laying on my back with my leg up on a laundry basket with pillows before swelling started to reside. They also had me wrap leg from toes to groin in two layers of ace wrap to apply pressure. My leg got so swollen my skin started to rash and blister from stretching. I suggest you make sure you don't have blood clot asap.

Dont stress out it, no good will come from that.

The proceedure is quite "rough". i felt as if i had leant out my leg to a rugby player who didnt take very good care of it before returning it.

When you are out, they manipulate, bend, stretch, and otherwise position your leg to make sure the length and alignment are correct before sewing it all back up, not to mention fitting the cup and ball/stem.

Im on my second, the first was tougher than this last one, opposite of yours im afraid. But its only first week for you, early times!!

Dont get to friendly with those little pills, a little pain now will help you appreciate the pain free times to come.

Be a patient patient, do your excersizes and lets see how it goes.

Good luck!

I highly advise ice and elevation above heart as much as possible. That was my fix for swelling.

Good luck

I gotta follow up my previous reply with the facts that i was in hospital for four days, seen by visiting nurse at six days, physical therapist daily until 14 days and by the surgeon at 14 days and 6 weeks, so had plenty of eyes on my incision and swelling, oh, the wife is an OR nurse as well.

Point is , you say youre badly swollen, i thought i was as well, but it really is utmost important for you to have knowledgable eyes on so you can be assured and move along to getting better. I shouldnt have assumed you had the same level of follow up as me. Sorry.

Happy

I had a similar experience with my first THR to your first one. But when I had it revised (which is a bigger op) I had quite a bit of swelling which made it harder to move my knee and ankle. I had swelling during the 5 months between stage 1 and 2 (when I got the new hip) and still have a bit of swelling after 10 weeks. I think exercise and keeping the leg elevated help. And sitting at the computer for hours (which I do) is not good. I walk every day and have been on an exercise or real bike for the last few weeks but every op is different, Hope it improves soon,

Mike

hi happy,

You probably have forgotten how you felt the first week post-op from 1st THR (???) -

this is what my surgeon told me when I said that this (2nd) was much more painful ... and also to not compare the 2 surgeries to each other - they will heal differently - some easier, some a   more challenging --

remember that your body has gone through 2 ( TWO) major invasive surgeries within 6 months .. phew, right?

This means a lot of healing, darling -

Taking pain medication to stay ahead of the pain for as long as it is needed is what my doctor advised me --- it will keep your body in less stress so healing can take better place -

Be very gentle and kind to your self Happy ... She is working so hard - please allow her to do so at her own pace ...

All is well, darling and you are doing good

big warm hug
