I wrote to the manufacturer who after 5 months said without a "lot" number couldn't say for sure but was certain the units were not the problem. The doc isn't very helpful.
Jennimc,
The specs on your implant device should be in your medical records at the hospital where you had the surgery. Which legally you have a right to see. I got my info when the company sent me the bill for $24,975.00. Thankfully my insurance paid it in full. My understanding is that dislocations are pretty rare, so I would be concerned. If you follow all the restriction requirements, most people are out of danger after 12 wks when the hip is encapsulated, but should still take reasonable care. What country do you live in? There are several websites that list the restrictions and after care for a THR and why a dislocation happens. I would certainly get the info for the implant and follow up with the manufacturer, and I would call them instead of writting, but that's just me. If the prosthetic is good then maybe you should get a second opinion from another doctor. It should be as simple as an x-ray.
Good luck with this and please keep us updated.
Thank you so much for your input. I gave DePuy (manufacturer) releases for both the hospital and the doc. (This correspondence took place after the second dislocation) They did obtain the records and said they were not given a lot number. They also said the surgeon felt the dislocations were attributed to muscular issues. I am not sure why he thinks this. Its just that months go by and things are great, then one movement of leaning slightly forward and pop. I am going to get my records from his office and get a second opinion. I've seen pics of his X-rays, and he seems pleased with the placement, I don't think they show muscles though, so guess we'll see. Thank you again, I truly appreciate any and all input. (I live in the USA)
I started thinking more about your situation after I first responded. I wonder if the ball part of the prosthetic is too small for you? It seems to me Depuy should be able to find the lot # with the serial # or something. I would think these things have serial #'s, it's hard for me to believe they can't identify each and every one they make, somehow. There is also a recall list online of all the parts that have been recalled in the U.S.. Mine is a Zimmer and my biggest fear is having a recall. I just looked at my bill and it only has the part #'s and description. There are several due to the way these are installed specific to the patient. I also live in the USA, NC and know that there are some very good doctors that do this surgery.
It sounds like you have been instrumental in trying to find an answer so I'm sure you will get the answers you need if you continue. Did they do your surgery posterier, anterior or lateral minimally invasive?
Good luck!
