ok so.. everything is going great, my calf and ankle feels like they wants to murder me from the inside tho! thanks calf muchly appreciated like i always wanted more pain...!
Fell off the diet wagon aka started eating real potatoes and too much red meat and bread and felt really lethargic so back on the diet wagon learnt my lesson.
Physio- so yesterday i got discharged from the physio and told to ditch the crutches inside and use two outside then start wean myself to none almost immediately due to a previous history of mangled gait thanks to my daft brain (was kicked in head by a grumpy horse) so thats good but because basically i know as much about physio as the physio does shes sent me on my merry way, which makes sense im holding a nhs space and id rather not and iv known this physio for about 15 years since i was a kid.
so all good on that front, shes suggested since my "taxi" aka parents are on holiday for two weeks (thanks parents your leaving me to look after my grandad who got his let hip done the day after i got my right done... he wont do his exercises or go a walk.. hes wasting an opportunity) basically to wait till iv had my post op assessment to go back to the pool and doing clams/ straight leg abductions but has suggested that i start doing my stnading exercises with a 2kg weight...
right so heres the issue... my ankle is all the way down there! how am i supposed to put a 2kg weight around it? if im progressing well is it safe to start stretching a little more each day till i reach my ankles lol I read that people can by this stage drive put their shoes on and live normal lifes but im from a equine physio background and hte last 7 years have been hell i dont really want to risk dislocation and my understanding is that muscles ligaments tendons take time to tighten again. so obviously my head is saying... i should hold of from these 2kg ankle gymnastics but im walking unaided so surely my hip must have tightened up to allow me to do that painess (painless with calf knee and ankle killer pains..)
thoughts? experiences? sorry for sarcastic humor! im procrastinating to avoid photo editing about 50k images for work lol
Sorry to hear of your frustrations. All I can suggest is that you continue to use both crutches until your muscles are able to support you to the degree that you are not limping. They will help you to get your body back to walking with a good gait which is really important. Keep doing those boring exercises.
Regarding your photo editing, I could help you there perhaps as this is what I've done for very many years <BG> High end set up correctly ICC colour managed etc.
Cheers
Richard
Morning hipster101! 🤠 I can't tie my shoes I can barely reach to the middle of calf. So all lace up shoes have elastic shoelaces so they stretch when I put shoes on with long shoehorn. Can you bend you're leg at knee and put weights on? Like maybe put foot up on stool then put on? My only worry would be if you ate still on hip precautions. Like not going past 90 degrees. I've been more on the precautionary side due to dislocation of my hip replacement and having a total hip revision 3 weeks later. I would ask your physical therapist about that. I mean you may be able to put on at knee and let weight slide to ankle but getting it off may be a problem. Check with therapist and or dr. Wishing you all the best and God's blessings to you for a speedy recovery and healing. Also for your grandpa 👴🏽. Try to get him moving! It will be to his benefit! Hugs 🤗Linda
Hi, I don't think I could have put weights around my ankles at 4.5 weeks! I was still sticking to the 90° rule. I used to reach things that were low down, but I did that by sticking my operated foot out behind me. (So my hands were never near my ankles.) I'm a bit surprised that weights have been suggested. I was just told to keep walking. Good luck, and take care!
ty for the reply.... im trying to get off the crutches not stay with "bob and steve" im used to the mangled gait patterens luckily iv spent so many years schooling myself and doing confirmation tests on horses that so far so good. iv not yet ventured outside without anything the whole shock of not having any pain is quite unusual!
im pretty sure you wont want to edit my whole image library of roughly 6tb of wildife (thats minus the junk which gets deleted each shoot) for credit only :P mostly because iv had to downscale and take time off with this hip so i have time to do it its just a pain in the ass. mind you i Profiled my laptop monitor and its still doing my head in! what do you normally shoot? sorry side subject but iv not spoke to very many normal people lately! and certainly none from "my world"
hey linda
i hope your having a nice day :-) sorry to hear you had to have a revision.
im doing my best not to cause any daft dislocations as iv basically been told they will spinal anathesia me again an dpop the sucker back in and then put me on double restrictions if anything happened lol thats a warning enough without mangling myself enough to cause a revision. i hope your healing well now?
Well the weird thing isi ts roughly about 4/5 years since i could reach my right foot so i think the PT might be barking up a tree for another few weeks! but i have come up with a slight solution i have many many manyyyyy latex resistance bands from over the years so im using once of those to add extra pressure. iv not yet done the standing up ones with it but its going to be easier to use a grabby hand and step into the loop than muck about with a weight :-) i will let you know how i get on lol...
my grandad needs a kick up the ass instead of motivating, hes walkign so slow i cant walk with him or i would to give him someone to talk to so my poor mums back is knackered from having to drag him out at snail pace! as it is hes been having an "infection for 3 days and went to doctors today! turns out hes just hoarding water but still... this is the kinda thing im dealing with with him lol
hugs to you 2 :-) if i find a solution to increasing stretch and strength without breaking restrictions i will let u know xx
yea i didnt expect her to wack a weight around my ankle to be honest but i found i knew it was there for sure but that it wasnt too much effort, Iv known this physio for so long that basically i do trust her judgement and she knows my body well enough to know what i can and cant do. i just really did not expect to be discharged from a physio and told to drop the crutches to stop gait issues at week 4 and a half. i havnt been brave enough to go outside without them yet "bob and steve" are like my wing men now!
im sticking to the restrictions until i see my surgeon on the 3/10 but im adding a resistance band tied into a loop into my lying exercises and ill add it in to the standing ones tomorrow if it feels safe. Iv also started 2 sets of 10 reps of the clam today iv only done it once so ill see how i feel tomorrow morning. my idea is if i start to stregnthen the little muscles and tighten the ligaments etc back up on the inside of the hip and pelvis that when it does get round to putting this weight on ill be more sturdy. cant remember when i last physically put my right shoe on normally.... i used to have to bend my knee and put it on backwards doing a wonky twist thingy
hope your having a nie day thank u for replying xxxx
Dear Hipster
I will confine my reply to a subject that I really do know about in depth and my apologies to those not the slightest bit interested in Photo editing/manipulation<G>
I laptop is quite unsuitable for reliable colour/ brightness/contrast corrections....period You will be aware how much an image changes when not viewed absolutely straight on and if you tilt the screen up and down.... not good. Even the best monitor profiling and calibration hardware and software can only give an approximate result. How are you profiling it?
I use several sizes of Eizo CG self calibrating monitors in a neutral grey subdued lighting enviroment and use Photoshop correctly colour managed....how about you? I suggest that if you want to take this discussion further that you message me.
Cheers
Richard
Hi Hipster,
I love the way you write and sense of humor ...
Not sure about the ankle weight though ... good thing actually that you cannot reach your ankle and are so creative using the rubber bands ... if you had the posterior approach to THR surgery, tendons, muscles etc. were cut and then stitched back together --- at 4.5 weeks post-op this tissue and such are still very fragile, I think - and to force them to lift heavier stuff might not be the best - it might even damage the newly formed tissue ... I would hold of using the rubber band as well and continue the exercises in a more relaxed way -
. In all likelihood, whatever your body has been doing to compensate for your hip pain or malfunction has also been causing problems all on its own. Our body nicely adjusted her self to go about with the least pain -
Now we have to relearn how to walk again with "normal" body, so to speak --- find the balance, correct posture and how to place our feet ... tedious !!!! Years of muscle memory don't disappear overnight.
Good to hear that that horrible pain is gone .....
keep us posted darling -
big warm hug
renee
Hi Linda I can't tie my shoelaces either and bought elastic laces also but the tongue kept going down in my shoe , my husband got a pair of flat handle pinch pliers and screwed long handles made from a thick wooden clothes hanger on the them , it works great
lol i think a lot of people will be going oh great... thats not physio related! ill send you a im in a min!
so what i do is ...
I pre tie my shoes so they are nice when they are on (done this for years due to stupid leg thats not so stupid anymore...) then currently I use the grabby hand to grab the tongue of the shoe, slide my foot in then use the shoe horn thing to open the heel and slide that bit in. and its done in a few seconds. i looked at elastic laces but im a little cookie and tried to buy strange colours so stopped myself! i could tie the laces through the tongue but so far i havnt bothered as its onlu a few seconds. xx
i havnt been writing blog posts whilst on "sick leave" and with limited amount of social time i think my blog style seems to be coming out here :D but id rather just have a bit of fun and humor about all this rehab nonsnese its stopping me noticing oh wait your lives changed do you need to get a new job etc? lol
i had a Lateral Anterior, they had to make the incision slightly larger its abotu 12 inch due to how small and damaged my joint was, unfortunately i metabolise pain killers etc really quickly so by the end of the op i felt most of it which was interesting!
Today is the day we find out if this band approach will work or not, im going to use a super light band and just see if its possible to get it on rather than do the exercises yet.
Well my biggest issue is combining hyper mobility with ankolyisng spondalytis and this hip replacement, my knee is very weak from about 5/6/7 years of having to weight bear instead of my hip taking it's share and although progress is faster than i expected i put in a lot of work prior to the op. Basically how my brain works is that i can walk aboslutly fine for 2 days get up and although in my head im walkign normally my left non op leg is lifting at hte hip and swinging or my right side is dipping out to the side. now this isnt down to actual strength or technique - although it does help to keep conditioned - its just my brain is a idiot sometimes.
my knee is struggling to take weight through it in the stair exercise so iv cut them down to 2 sets of 10 but i cannot stop them, there is no pain in my thigh no pain in my hip, it doesnt cause any ankle or muscle pain its just a case of the hypermobility has a lack of conditioning so i dont have the control to move my knee normally.
thankyou for yoru reply tho :-) im not over doing it, iv got 9000 images of yellowstone to gt through today and probably a nap after lunch to deswell :-)
weirdly the only pains i have are those that really are side effects or weaknesses of a over flexible body. i already unfortunately resigned myself to the fact im going to be doing basic maintenance exercises every day forever! loosing some pre op weight will help with the knee.
hugs xxxxxxx
