4 weeks post op and bored!

Hi Hip Tastic People!

I had my Left hip replaced on the 27th of April so on Monday will be exactly 4 weeks. I am now walking without crutches (have been since week 3 if Im honest) and feel absolutley fine. Very little pain and am not taking much medication apart from if I overdo it a little. Have asked to go back to work as I am finding being at home very boring...... So off to see my consultant on Thursday 28th to see if he will sign me off and give me a 'fit to work' note. I have to say the relief from not having that awful 'bone on bone' pain is fantastic and apart from a bit of numbness around the scar I feel as If I am getting my life back after nearly 10 months of pain and being badly let down by the NHS.....

Glad you are doing so well. I am 6 weeks today, and to my frustration cannot yet walk unaided without a limp. I practice the proper stance etc by walking up and down the kitchen and have managed to improve over the last couple of days. Outside I still use one crutch.

Not bored yet as I have essay deadlines for open university, rather brain ache at the moment

I think as the surgeon says we all recover at different paces. My father had his second hip replaced in 2014 at the age of 83 and did so well that I have used him as my mentor. Obviously we have the 'hip gene' in the family as my mum has had a replacement too. I am doing some work from home but miss the interaction of my collegues. Good luck with the essays Maggie!

Hi Kazzie

All sounds good....tho you might want to return to work part time as you ease back in...

I guess you are showering now...and even putting on your sox?

Meanwhile keep up those exercises and check your posture: imagine a silver thread firmly guild ing your walking smooth and upright lengthening your neck!

You are luck I have been told I have to stay on 2 crutches for 6 weeks

I am 3 weeks today. And have used just 1 at times round house and feel ok

seeing phisyo again next week and see what she say but it was her that told me 2 crutches when I see her at  weeks so not looking good

I'm glad you are making such a good recovery.

I am one day behind you, having had RTHR on the 28th April.  I was told by my physio that I must walk at all times with 2 crutches for 6 weeks.  Can I ask what you had implant wise and how old you are?

Thanks Paula

Fantastic. I am 9 days post - op today and have been on one stick since day 1. I hope to be where you are in 2 weeks time, and really admire you. I have been out for lunch and then shopping today with a friend - feel a bit sore now, and am actually looking forward to a glass of wine tonight!  (Whether I will or not is a different matter!).

Good luck on your return to work

Christine

Hi Kazzie, take it from me PLEASE! I was just nearly at 4 weeks, I too thought...hmmmm what's all the fuss about weeks months to recover! Laying in bed one night doing the lying down excersises when..... POP BANG WHALLOP! Out it came, the pain was excruciating to say the least! I waited 13hrs in A&E before I was taken to surgery to have it manipulated back in! That set me back to square 1. And here I am going out of my head with boredom!   I hope you are one of the few who sail through it.  All the very best to you.

P.S Let us know how you get on. Take care Julie.

I have been told same as u I am47 and have ceramic and metal

Did the hospital said u home on 1 stick if so u are lucky where r u

Hello Carol.  I was also told 2 crutches for 6 weeks and I complied indeed did not get down to 1 till week 7.  Saw my surgeon on Week 8 and walked into his clinic unaided.  I do not have a limp and walk perfectly normally - am not saying that is due to sticking to the 2 crutch rule but who knows.  My balance is now excellent and i no longer fear of falling.  Have severe osteoporosis and aged 66.  I did start crusing in house with one crutch and aid of furniture around week 4.  Had ceramic and metal cemented in

Stick with it as I am sure there is a reason for the instruction

I do find it hard around the house to keep to 2 crutches  lol

Ouch! That's nasty Julie, yes i am being good and not doing too much of anything but the surgeon said from day one that he had done a good job, not had the muscle cut and the top of the range Exeter ceramic joint with plastic socket fitted and that I was to put my full weight on it. I've even got used to sleeping on my back and have to say quite enjoy it. Will let you know how I get on when I see him Thursday.

Take care

Keep positive but remember to keep your back straight when walking dont lean to the side the crutch is on else you just put pressure on your 'good' side. As for the wine......... Yes I find that helps immensly!!

Amazed at thought of staying on two crutches for six weeks...cos Exeter hospital said they hoped 95% of us hippies would hand in our crutches at 6 weeks. I did at 7 weeks...but only cos of london weekend at end of wk6 on the tube trains.

Yes we all heal differently but the more we move the better....that is of course if we can complication free. Proposing we stay on crutches so long as a norm for that long seems bonkers!

Hi I had the Exeter ceramic and plastic socket. My hip had been sligthly deformed from birth it appears so my whole leg now feels so much more comfortable. Physio said go down to one crutch when you feel comfortable to do so and none when you are totally weight bearing. Reading the comments its amazing to me how much the advice varies from area to area. I am in Derby and had the operation privately and I'm 55. Fantastic Surgeon and really neat scar which in a month or so will not show at all just dissolvable stitches and came home with no dressing on. Was in for 3 nights.

Hi Carol I'm 46 and have ceramic in ceramic uncemented. I think it's to do with the bone needing 6 weeks to graft in to the new joint as there is no cement holding it in place.

was starting to think I had been singled out lol! X

Hi Mic

Yes you are right posture is everything I tell myself walk straight, head and shoulders back, should balance a book on my head really, propper deportment! Been showering fine since day 3 and started putting own socks on in week 3. Every day it gets easier but im not rushing it and keep doing everything in moderation. Will be doing some part time hours from next week. Desk job light duties and have a chaffeur into the bargain..... May get used to it!

All surgeon said was I had a very shallow socket when then gon there so I had to have ceramic socket and ball the metal which they did not have so had to get from other hospital while I was in operation so was down twice as long ( poor husband worried sick )  don't know if cemented or uncermenred

Where r u in the UK
