hi sonnysgirl
i had my tkr on the 5 of march and i have had a lot of trouble sleeping due to the pain, i try to do the excerices but find them very hard due to the pain, i was taking codine pills but because i have irritable bowels they made me very constipated, which gave me a great deal of pain as well, so i try to take paracetamols but they dont take the pain away,i get very stiff in the knee and find it very painful to bend or straighten and sometime have been reduced to tears.i have a ball from the physco and i try to use that just to keep my knee mobile.i put a cushion between my knees at night in bed.as i cant put my knees together.i can understand you being afraid of regular phyco,i was and i wont say i found it easy i didnt i can do the 95 dec but it still hurts, i was pushing myself and that hurt a lot, and after speaking to the other people in my physo group they all told me, not to force it just do as much as you fell comfortable with.so good luck with your physco
Hi
as you will see from other posts on the forum, the early days can be really hard and it can take a while to feel like the exercises are working. But you have an OK bend so things are probably just fine. It was stressed to me by the physio that you MUST use painkillers - I am taking paracetamol, codeine and naproxen. I am only just starting to step down the codeine at three and a half weeks and I had a partiL not a total replacement. Take the pils regularly - don't wait for pain, that way the exercises will be a little more manageable and will also make it easier to sleep. I am also taking both lactulose and Senna and have been told to continue while on the codeine as it really does bung you up!
I was also told that it is more important to walk well using one or two crutches than to limp around without. You want to get the muscles working properly - getting rid of crutches is not a race! Given that you are very young, I am guessing your knee was in a very bad way beforehand so just give yourself time. Rti is natural to be anxious because the rehab is really stressful.
good luck with your follow up and make sure you rest and watch a bit of rubbish TV.
Marlene have you tried a combination of laxatives to enable you to take the codeine. Lactulose and Senna are really helping for me and I am taking relatively low doses of codeine.
Marlene you HAVE to get onto good pain pills or you will never do it. They tried 3 on me before I ended up with oxycodone, and after the manipulation I was taking 6/day plus 2 Aleve/day, plus doubling up on the oxy before PT visits and that was still barely enough. I was also eating 6 prunes/day plus taking a stool softener. I think the stool softener really messed up my taste buds as everything tasted terrible, and I got off that first. Now I'm off everything. I think the Aleve were important because they are anti-inflaammatories, while the oxycodone is just a pain killer.
