5 days post-op, can't bend knee

I'm 5 days post-op and can't bend my knee into a bridge position while laying flat. It's one of my exercises for the week, and I still can't do it unassisted. I can manage with help or a strap, but only in the morning. Also having a hard time bring my knee out in front of me. I do have swelling around my knee and psoas. Just wondering how long this has taken folks as its a position essential for so much - getting out of bed easier, getting into the shower using a bench...

thanks

Hi and now your a member of the hippies who do understand all your pain and all the triumps you will acheive to come.

your only 5 days out from major surgery. Take your time and don't expect so much at first. The bone needs time grow and secure the joint. And you need time to mentally adjust. Everything is on overload.

take it one day at a time and as time goes by things will become easier as part of the heeling process.

Follow all all the instructions and once you start therapy you will continue to improve in leaps and bounds. It tales everyone different times of progress and many days of staying with exercise.

when you can get outside a change of scenery does wonders.

many heeling blessings sent your way.

HOPE

Each person is different we're not all the same, each of us will heal in a different way to someone else. I never had a problem bending my knee after a few hours post op, but even now I can't bend it right the way back where it used to go to before the op and I am 4 weeks post op now. In my opinion one minute I think I am doing really well and the next minute I am getting up in the morning with a swollen and stiff leg. It will take as long as it takes for all of us, I think we should all just go with the flow, do what we think is enough for us and don't compare our healing (fast or slow) with anybody else's. At the end of the day we have all had this done to have a better quality of life, just chill and let it happen when it's ready to. Get well soon. Tony

hi meg,

warm welcome to the hippies forum -

wow, 5 days post-op and already trying to do the bridge ... I am assuming here that you had the anterior approach ?

I had  posterior approach (2x) ; the exercises given were ankle rotations, foot pumps, sliding leg to butt and side (all in bed) and some standing exercises -

Swelling of operated leg are common after a hip replacement - Mine started upper thigh, down to the knee and then ankle .This represents the normal process of healing and can last for several weeks -

you are doing great !!!  are you getting physical therapy ?

please come back any time you have a question or concern okay?

big warm hug

renee

God that so early . I cannot really remember the 1 st week just loads of pain and taking to bed to lick my wounds . I am sure that is normal .. Could not lift my leg off the bed ! I think they made me bend my knee before I left hospital and I think I told them no bloody way !

Dont worry, you're only 5days done ...my operated leg was enormous ..knee like a football..but has settled a good bit .( my op 2/11/16) ...I'm a bit more operational ...take care ...gx

As others have said, don't worry. I could do this almost immediately post op, but the hospital physio would have had a fit if they knew because they have it down for not until week 4! On the other hand, the sitting march once I can't do, and finally figured out that it is because of my spine - nothing to do with the hip!

Everyone had their own pace for stuff. It depends on what you  could do before the op, how your recovery is going, and what else is in play. We are all individuals. I have found that the hospital physios advice for some version of average (and even then they all disagree!). I had my two week physio follow up yesterday, and honestly, it was a waste of my time and I was generally unimpressed with the whole thing. But, and this makes a big difference, I have my own physio. She advises based on me and only me!

So what you can't do, approach slowly and don't push to hard. You need a try - but not so much you risk hurting yourself. It will come when it's ready.

I personally think this is too soon. I was a lot further on before I could do this. But I was able when my body was ready don't worry. It will come
