5 days post op THR

Can I sleep om ny non surgical side. Hopeless on my back.

It was 6 weeks before I could sleep on my non op side , make sure you follow the rules and you should be fine

I was told no I couldn't sleep on my good side as the operated leg could go over the good leg and that's not good. I have just started sleeping on my operated side  and I'm 4 weeks post op. I don't exactly sleep directly on my bad hip , it's more on my stomach but oh my it's so good to have a good nights sleep.

No Dave, on your back for 6 wks. Think they said you can dislocate it sleeping on good side. I'm happy, i can go on either side now even if I am moaning and groaning when I turn over. (Hubby not too happy as I keep waking him)

I'll let others answer your question because I;m not sure what the correct answer is.  I'll just say that I was surprised that I am quite enjoying sleeping on my back.  It's been a little over two weeks and I think I've become a back-sleeper convert.  I tuck all sorts of pillows in, around and under and then sleep like a log.  If you're not supposed to sleep on your side yet, maybe you can become a convert of back sleeping like I am.  Good luck with it.    Leslie

If your surgeon says so, you can. Most don't allow it. I tried at 3 weeks, with a pillow between my legs, and had such pain after a couple of hours! Didn't try again until officially allowed at 6 weeks, and all was better then. In the meantime, I had to sleep sitting propped by many pillows, since sleeping on my back was impossible with sleep apnea and no cpap machine. Didn't sleep but an hour or so at a time, so napped when I could over the 24 hours. Was the worst part of recovery for me. Wishing you better luck, Davy!

I find it very interesting that there are so many different rules for the same operation. I had a right lateral replacement and was allowed to sleep on the left side using a pillow immediately and on the operated side as soon as I could tolerate it. I'm 8 weeks tomorrow and had no issues. Still didn't sleep really well until this past week though!

Hey Jennifer

Same here 5th week running post my operation.

But my doctor said big no to sleep on operated leg side

Hi davyboyok....I was told it was fine as long as you put a pillow between your knees to keep the operated side (hip) even and not slanting downward. For me it hasn't worked well because when I try it I have pain in the thigh (femur) it is getting better and the first time I tried it I was probably only about 5-6 days post op and it was so painful I had to have my husband turn me back over (he had just helped me turn on my side) as I wasn't able to even do that by myself. I have read posts from others though who have been able to lay on their side right from the start, so I think a lot of it depends on the person....Wishing you well.....Barb

hi davy,

all valid responses but confusing ... I too was allowed to sleep on unoperated side while still in hospital - pillow between my knees and was taught how to turn on side and back -

I am not helping here, am I ....

how are you doing otherwise?

big warm hug

Hi Brenda:

How many weeks post op are you? I am 11 weeks, slow healing with Te weak glutes so I am constantly trying to find a comfortable position at night. Haha about the hubby bit. I have taken to sleeping in the other bed when I am too uncomfortable and restless so not to disturb him. When did you start sleeping on your operated side?

six weeks was what I was told too, personally I would give up trying to think you will feel more comfortable if you did, I am afraid you will probably be just as uncomfortable - it is one of the joys of the surgery, but every week that passes it gets easier.

I was told absolutely NO, and I had to go through it twice in 10 weeks due to the error made with my joint.

I believe that it aids the new bionic parts to settle in the right place (especially the non-cemented ones) and makes sure everything is in line as it heals.

I know it's awful, I propped myself up with pillows, flexed my good leg sideways and bent the knee, and raised my knees together and supported them with pillows.  I found an iPod with soothing music good too.

I've just had right THR on the 4th of July while in hospital I've been able to sleep on my non operated side, with pillows packed in between my legs and under my back to keep me on my side. Hope that's helpful.

That's great - welcome to the hippy side of life
