5 weeks post op - back ache has developed and restless legs

Following total right hand hip replacement , this week i have developed lower back pain on the non operated side which i cant find any relief from. I also feel tenderness on the outer thigh of my non operated side. That, together with restless legs at the end of the day is very uncomfortable. Has anyone had similar problems?

Hi, are you using 2 crutches? If not could be that youre walking crooked
Try taking magnesium for the restless legs.
Youll get there. Good luck.

I suggest that you see a good chiropractor. Please post how you get on.

I had a hip revised two years ago and two weeks ago woke in the morning with a pain around the joint and extending round to my groin which stopped me walking due to the pain. I was certain that the joint was OK but needed the pain dealt with.My chiropractor found that my pelvis had become twisted and corrected it at my consultation yesterday. Today has been completely pain free. Your choice!
Cheers, Richard

i’ve always had minor restless leg in my operated leg, presumably unrelated to any problems that I was having with my hip pre-surgery. However post surgery, it is quite significant and I don’t even hesitate to take my homeopathic remedy when I go to bed instead of waiting for the legs to start doing their thing, since it takes a while to take effect. Sometimes I have to take more in the night. My restlessness occurs almost solely while in bed. I take Hyland Restful Legs.

I have occasionally been using 1 crutch ( for example if i am carrying something from one room to another). I have also shuffled a step or two with no crutch . I suspect this is the problem - I will make sure I use two from now on. I have also tried to reduce painkillers because my operated side is pretty much pain free. I think I will increase them again .

Hello, I have had back pain too and it for me is the strain on my back from not yet being able to use the operated side fully. it is made worse using one crutch or stick. my physio advised staying on 2 crutches until off them and this dies prevent it. hope you feel better soon.

Greetings. I too am 5 weeks post LTHR (right side done end 2015). Prior to op, I took magnesium plus+ which was very effective in preventing cramps. I stopped taking them following op. but re-started just last week after waking up with tightening muscles/restless leg. Since then, the sensation hasn’t repeated. May be worth trying. Like you too, I’ve experienced tenderness in the opposite hip and back has ached occasionally (and knees!). Backache I think was related to me overdoing things and I took tylenol a couple of times and rested which seemed to sort it out . It is likely our bodies are re-adjusting to the new ‘hardware’ and changed gait. I walk with 1 crutch outside and occasionally no crutch inside. While I limp a bit with no crutch (therefore mindful about using crutch mostly), I do notice limp is improving and I’m getting more confident about progressing to no crutch. While it’s brilliant to be 5 weeks post I’m impatient to shed the crutch and get bike on the bike. Hopefully a good sign to be focusing on getting back to normal. Listen to your body and best wishes for continuing progress.

I had restless legs at times in early weeks but that has since disappeared. I would just walk around the house and elevate my legs on my bed. I am now 4 1/2 months and fine. I saw my oseoapath that I used beforehand and he helped with the back pain (which for me was my muscle) on operated leg. I also guess that you are doing your exercises.
Take care Ann

Probably still early days yet? Loads of things going on in your body. You will have been using your body differently pre op to cope with your bad hip which your body gets used to. Then post op you’re trying to revert to how you were before you needed your hip replacement. In other words, all your muscles will be weak now, not just around your operated leg. Persevere, keep on with the exercises, use the crutches then crutch until it’s easier without them. It’s a lovely feeling when you hand them back and they quite happily accept them. Agree to take the magnesium for restless legs. Another thought, if it’s not long since your operation you should be lying on your back still. That gives me back ache anyway but nothing like the pain I was on before! Good luck with the healing, you will get there.

I have found that doing foot exercises (circling, and up and down) helps with any hint of restless legs. Might help you…?

Hi Jillie,

It is very early days after your hip op not to have irritating feelings which will last maybe a few more weeks.

Magnesium will stop restless legs and cramp, depending on how deficient your body is on magnesium it goes to where it is most needed until the levels become normal therefore, might not work immediately, but it will work.

I had lower back pain after my hip op which ceased upon re-starting pilates, then it went within 2/3 weeks.
