5 weeks post TKR and has it got a life of it's own?

I've a feeling others have had something similar.  But relaxed in bed last night THE LEG MOVED ITSELF!  It bent up the knee until I got the cramping feeling at the back of the knee and gasped.  Was it hacked into?  Was it a psychic using their powers on the metal bits (had just watched a programme with Uri Geller LOL!) or was it muscles mending or nerves mending or something like that LOL!  It was very odd, feeling it move all on it's own LOL!  It was a gentle slow movement that was fine until it got to 'crunch point'.  Weird!

Hi after a hip fracture I also suffered a similar thing, still do sometimes, there muscle spasms on me but could be something different on you.

Its as if it comes on gradually and then wham it hurts

Sounds like it is a thing of muscles etc. mending then Alex.  It was very weird LOL!

Chris I've had exactly the same thing about 8 times now since I came home from hospital if you look at my earlier post I've also asked people for advice but even my consultant thought it strange my knee actually lifted upwards into like a spasm lasting literally 2 seconds but scary when it happens

Ah, I couldn't remember who it was who had mentioned something like this!  Thanks Eileen!  It really is quite spooky when it happens, isn't it!  I can laugh about it now but if it keeps happening and goes to that crunch point at the back of the knee I won't be finding it too funny.  When I said to my husband I wondered if it had been 'hacked into' he told me he hoped a group of Irish dancers didn't hack into it LOL!  The mind boggles.  I hope it doesn't happen when I'm walking along too!  Did yours do it when you were relaxed or were you walking?????!

Twice when I started to stand up out of chair and a few times in bed gosh it was scary. 1st time it happened I was actually in hospital the nurse sent for the doctor but I rearly think he thought I'd lost my mind lol I felt so stupid .

OH MY GOODNESS - for it to happen as you started to stand from a chair - that is seriously worrying!!!!!  I can imagine it in hospital though - as though you were trying to trip someone up if there was anyone near you LOL!  But perhaps we need to tell the staff more when these things happen so they realise!  You saying you felt stupid then - the day I had my op after I'd been back on the ward for a while I did a wee and then they told me to sit in the chair where I fell fast asleep.  Keep in mind I'd got up at 4.30 am to be there for 6.30 am.  When the doctors came round they woke me and asked how I was and if I'd done a wee since the op.  I told them yes, I did it yesterday.  They looked at me totally puzzled and I explained that the nurse had taken it and tested it.  Then they pointed out to me that I'd only come into hospital that day LOL!  But looking back on it, I was low in salt levels and low blood pressure, so I reckon it was probably down to dehydration LOL!  Apparently that can leave you confused LOL!  But I did feel silly LOL!  I was convinced I was on my second day there LOL!

Electrolytes are really important and tend to get a little off w surgeries. Both potassium and calcium when they are low can cause cramping and other twitching. As Chris pointed out low sodium can cause confusion and can affect muscles. Phosphorus is the 4th electrolyte thats important in the group but ususaully, as long as ur eating, not a problem.

But muscles also cramp when not used or stretched and we tend to protect our knees out of fear of hurting them or causing pain to ourselves. Its like the stronger muscle is pulling and the weaker muscle is complaining. A long slow stretch works well and dont forget to breathe! Even 17 weeks out, if i dont stretch, i feel achey.

Hope this helps.

I've got sachets of salt to take with me for the next one LOL!  Not risking having to wait a day extra to go home because of low salt this time LOL!  Good thinking about the stretching!:-))))
