I had surgery for my broken 5th metatarsal 11 weeks ago... And told I am still not suppose to weight bare at all for another 2, then begin trying to walk in a boot with crutches until my next appt which is 5 weeks away. Can someone help me understand why my dr. Is making me stay off of it for so long, I just want to get back to doing normal stuff. I think being a 310lb football player plays a roll in it but he never said anything about it,I don't think that could effect just walking ?
Hi Jared,
I believe the main reason for no wt bearing is so your foot can heal. Bottom line is you will damage much more by walking on it. I have been no wt bearing for 9 wks, in boot with wheel chair, now I started walking with the boot. Bones in your foot are very fragile, we need them, don't mess it up by putting wieght on it. Be patient, I realize it's football season but, weigh your options.

Wow, that is a long time non weightbearing. I had the same surgery 4 1-2 weeks ago and am now bearing weight in boot for another 3 1/2. That does seem like a long time. Did your physician say the bone was not healing? It is a tough fracture to heal. Ask more questions. I hear after 4 weeks putting pressure on the bone helps. I also used a bone stimulator which helps tremdously. Let us know. How old are you?
I am a 19 yr old college football player, he said the bone was healing he just wants me still off it. Maybe because he thinks I am going to try and go right back to playing or intense workouts ? I would just like to be able to walk around without crutches
Oh got it. I do understand. Swear to doctor you will play by the rules!! It will heal!!
