Hello everyone!
I just had my 6 week follow-up with my OS and couldn't have gotten a better report card. X-Rays show a good 40 deg. acetabular socket angle and mobility is very good in all directions. I've been cleared for all activities (except running) with pain as my guide. Scar is nice and clean as well. I got rid of my walking aids (cane) about a week ago and have been walking 4-5 miles per day and a week ago I increased my workouts to include the elliptical trainer for 20 minutes every other day as well as some abductor/adductor work. I'm also cleared for swimming! Looking forward to that! I don't mean to brag but am just so happy that my life is getting back to my pre-hip pain days. I was so very active and am getting back to that again. I live to surf! I know some of you are doing great, some not so great and everyone else somewhere in between. There is light at the end of the tunnel and it's the light of life. You will get there, I'm a firm believer in that so keep thinking positive and make sure you do your PT! It's most important!
Best of luck to all!
Well done. Fantastic news. I am 5 weeks post op and recovery going very well. I have been walking unaided outside for last couple of days and ok buy I have at least one crutch/cane with me. I find that after 10 minutes or so I start to get shooting nerve type pains further down my leg. Not painful just weird. I am convinced it'd muscles groaning. Did you get this at all and if so for how long?
Wonderful news so happy for you.
Ginny
That is really good news. Do remember that your muscles are still strengthening to hold your new joint in it's socket and that you are very vulnerable to dislocation for some time more especially as you gain more mobility and confidence.
Enjoy your new found freedom ......safely!
Cheers Richard
That's awesome. I cant wait. I am hoping to get cleared to start PT again tomorrow. Just curious , did you have posterior or anterior surgery? Good job! Take care of those new parts.
Hi Sandra! It sounds like you're doing well yourself! There are days when I get weird pains but I can usually pin it down to something I did the previous day. Haven't had a pain as you described on a regular basis though. I hope it gets better for you!
Richard, that's one of the things I fear the most is that in feeling good, I do something stupid and have a setback. Those are truly words of wisdom and I will live by them. Thanks!
Hi Chuck, I had anterior on my left hip. Surgeon did a fantastic job! I will take care of the new parts and will treat them as my very own! Hahaha!
That is terrific to hear. Surfing is also my passion. I've been unable to surf now for 5 weeks, as I was unable to get the board between my legs any longer. I'm 68, so I'm not sure how many more years I have. My morning surf spot is Old Man's at SanO which as great longboard break. I was fortunate, my OS agreed to do bilateral THR. My main incentive is to get them both done and get back in my morning dawn patrol routine. Let me know how you return to surfing goes. I'm guessing that even though you can swim they probably want you to hold off on surfing for awhile. Is that correct? My surgery is not till 10/6. It was great hearing this very positive news, esp from a fellow surfer.
That's wonderful! At what point were you able to start walking again? I am nine days following surgery and after I sit for a spell, or when I get up in the morning, the walker is still very reassuring for me. Did you use a walker in the beginning? When did you switch to a cane?
Hey Pat, nice to see a fellow surfer here. I've surfed Old Man's once and lower Trestles a few times but it's been a long time. I grew up in Redondo Beach and my surfing stomping grounds were RAT, Redondo and Hermosa Beaches. I live in North Myrtle Beach, SC now. I'm now a "right" coaster! I'm a bit younger than you are, 57, and looking forward to surfing again. My OS is pretty much leaving it up to me as to when I'm ready to surf but I think it's going to be few more months. I haven't even tried my pop up yet on dry land and quite honestly I'm afraid to at this point. When I do feel I'm ready, I'll probably take my SUP out so I'm already standing. We'll see. When I was considering the THR, I found out that Laird Hamilton just had one late last year. Also, I don't know if you remember a pro surfer in the 60's and 70's named Mike Purpus out of Hermosa Beach? Anyway, he's had both hips replaced now and I think he's doing ok. I surfed with his younger brother Dan a few times at Ventura County Line. I'm about 6 or 7 years younger than Mike. Anyway, good luck with yours. Wow, bilateral...that's going to be rough I would imagine. You'll be so much better off though when you're all healed up! I'm sure you're looking forward to it! The healed up part that is! Take care and good luck!
Hi Anne! I was walking the very next day after surgery and haven't stopped yet. I used a walker for only about 2 days and then switched to a single cane. I finally ditched that about a week ago. It's different for everyone though. It depends on several factors such as age, fitness level, type of surgery, etc. so don't be discouraged if you're not ready to ditch the walker yet. It will come I assure you! The main thing is, I hope, that you no longer are feeling that osteo-arthritic pain anymore. I'm sure you have other pains but those will fade with time. Keep the faith!
hi cormacrobert,

What encouraging news and something to look forward to. I am almost 4 weeks post THR, and can't imagine having the strength to walk 1 mile, let alone 4-5 miles! It's something to aim for though. Thank you! X
