6 weeks post op

Hi all, I'm 6 weeks post op, this Saturday. Discharged from physio, walking inside without a stick, outside walking if going far I use my stick, sleeping well, eating well, feeling pretty good, until the weekend. Felt my scar area ( which is healed and clean ) felt strange, parts of the area were soft to touch, other areas hard and warm to touch, Gp confirmed my fears yesterday and it is a infection, easily cleared with antibiotics, but Wow has this knocked me emotionally.

Has  anyone else had a infection this late on?

FABULOUS news! I know this means a lot of effort on your part and it is great to hear - for you and for all of us still earlier on the process. Do me a favour and if you live anywhere near water ... please go and soak in the view for me? I don't know why (I don't live on a coast), but I have been hankering for this for two weeks. Maybe the 'sweats have me craving sea air or a good swim. In any case - bravo. Go forth and walk freely and (I hope) without pain.

Oh dear! Just saw the rest of your post! You must think I am the most insensitive boor. This development must be be really scary and fustrating. So sorry. I hope this clears quickly and you can resume the true path of recovery. Hugs from the crazy and sleep deprived Canuck.

Linda, I was just about to ask if it was you running a temperature . I guess we are all so keen to hear good news that we override the bad - heh!

Barbara, I am so sorry, I really hope the antibiotics kick in quick and you will be having a coastal walk again soon, or at least one for Linda.

I hope you get rid of it quickly and continue with normal healing.

Hi Barbara,

this sounds like a superficial infection rather than a deep wound infection.  I know it's a blooming nuisance because you were flying high and then WHAM!  It  could have been caused by anything, maybe a crafty scratch if it was itching, or maybe even in your sleep, but if a course of antibiotics will clear it up please don't let it spoil what sounds like a wonderful recovery.  A few days of tablets and all sorted.  Instead of feeling emotional perhaps you could feel happy that you spotted it so early, give a sigh of relief and continue on the  progress as you have been doing.

Thanks for posting this.  It will give us some idea what an early infection looks and feels like.

Onwards and upwards Barbara.

Love Cels xxx

Barbara, gosh, not the news you wanted to hear...at all, especially this late, you expect to be in the clear by this stage. It is good news that you have caught it so early, have they started you on antibiotics now?

Have you told your surgeon, I would think he/she needs to look at it as well, as this is very important that it is dealt with swiftly. Other posts with this problem have had intravenous antibiotics, so do check with your surgeon directly.

I would feel knocked by this too, but hopefully it is a temporary blip rather than a big set back and they can get it under control quickly.

Keep ip with the brilliant walking and look after yourself, and keep us posted how you are x

Hi

Yup My wound continued to become infected up to 4.5 MONTHS after the operation. My body didn't absorb all of the absorbable sutures so the LAST time it became infected my dr cleaned the wound and removed the last two tiny pieces ( less than 2 cms)  which sorted it all out.  It does make me a little concerened about my 2nd THR although the surgeon says they will try a different suture and a different dressing (I"m allergic to the adhesive in dressings too).  I so agree about the emotional strain this type of wound infection creates.  It becomes exhausting again.  Take care and take the antibiotics

Hi Linda, not at all, do I think you are insensitive, I have to say, I feel your first message kind of kicked me up the rear, as you say I have done so well, and I need to look on the positive side. Saying that, it's been a horrid day today, it's painful, red and angry and I hope to goodness the antibiotics do their job.

Hope you manage to get some sleep tonight.

Tempruture is up a little, managed to get it down tonight, so hopefully tomorrow it will be normal.

Hi, I see my consultant a week today, I will see how I go on with the antibiotics, let them do their work for the duration. I'm pretty sure it's suerficial, however my leg and thigh ache somewhat and walking is painful which I have not suffered with since day one.

Hi Rose, I will see how I am tomorrow and if not much better I will call my consultant, I've had a full days dose of antibiotics and hopefully a good nights sleep will also help.

Thanks, yes I will complete the course but I might call my consultant tomorrow if no significant change, it's just the pain, and myntempruture that concern me, I've bee pain free since my operation.
