6 weeks update

Hi all - cannot believe how quickly the 6 weeks have passed siince my THR.  Everything is going as I had hoped - doing pretty much everyhting I need to do - managing to get in the pool most days and doing some leg exercises (summer appears to have disappeared now mind!).

Occasionally I forget I have even had a hip replacement and have to remind myself to still take it easy and remember the precautions.

Still have pain - buttock ache and some knee pain but I need to strengthen my leg muscles given the wastage over the last year.  Have a slight limp when tired but generally pretty good.

Not using any sticks or other aides for 95% of the time now - still take stick with me when out and about but really don't use it much.

Sleeping is now pretty good - sleeping is my usual position now - given up with the back sleeping and hip feels fine unless I manage to get myself into a strange position and it reminds me to adjust.

Anyway thought it useful to drop an update to help those not as far along or just setting out on this journey.

Hi mark,

what a great post!! so positive, I'm so pleased to hear you are doing so well after only 6 weeks, you are an inspiration to us all, well done,

Lynne x

Well done Mark. So happy Ur doing so well after only 6 weeks. This forum is for all the good news stories along with the not so good ones. We're all different & will recover at different rates. Soooo looking forward to having mine done now. I've heard some positive & some negatives on here but it's patients being completely truthful, which we all need to be prepared for. Even though some of us would rather not know what's to come. I'm the one that needs to know everything. Keep us posted on Ur recovery. Delighted Ur doing so well so soon.

I am now 8 weeks and I still occasionally have stick or crutch, I managed to kneel at the weekend and I still need support to get up as I have still got to stick with 90 degree rule, I have been very lucky that haven't needed physio my surgeon says best exercise is walking alright for him I wonder if he has had it done lol. I am back to work on 21st on a phase return 20 hours for the first week. Are you retired or do you still work, I am a cashier for Morrison's.

wow thanks Mark and well done, you sound so well and far more advanced than myself. I am going for my chack-up tomorrow (7 weeks on Thursday) I have had a lovely walk along the beach this afternoon bit windy but lovely.I am still using a stick though. But well done xx

Have you seen the hip op on u tube quite an eye opener to see what and how the surgeon treats your leg all I can say to it now I know why my knee downwards felt bruised lol

Thanks for your reply.  Don't get me wrong the first couple of weeks are tough, having had my hip pinned previously I was aware of most of the aches & pains, but if you can get through the two weeks it really does get better with every day.

I know this is not the case for everyone and that my young age (44) is a big help in this - just want to spread the positive message to help people like you prepare for the op and subsequent recovery.

Thanks Lynne - we are all in the same position so need to help each other where we can.

I'm 44 - 6 kids make me feel older mind!  Self employed IT Consultant so able to work from home during the recovery period thankfully.  You sound like you are making great progress too.

I watched that video - yikes.  Half of me wished I hadn't but the other half was happy that I had a better understanding just what goes on.  Not for the squeamish mind!

Hi Gill - am sure you are doing just fine.  You have had a difficult 7 weeks with your husband etc - bound to delay some of your recovery to some extent.

I'm also younger so am sure that plays a major part - will have to see how I get on in 15-20 years time when I need a revision!

Love the beach but next couple of days probably on the chilly side!

Hi everyone, and good news Mark, I went to my 5 week appointment today, and although they were quite pleased I have to have some physio as the muscle isn't too strong at the moment and I need my one crutch still.

but thankfully no pain and I would like to thank all the folks on here for their inspiration and tips. So if you've just had the operation keep logging on, it really does help.

Watched it a few days after seeing the 1st surgeon. It's not for the squeamish. But at least I now know what the op involves. I have a very strong pain threshold according to my docs. Hmmm I wonder sometimes.  I reckon I'm having so much pain now that there has to be so much relief after. My hips & knees are so painful. Can't sleep at night. On

y an hour or two at a time. Twisting & turning. So prepares me for what's to come by the sound of it.

That all sounds very positive mark. I'm 49 & am hoping I'll be a new woman for the next half century when I turn 50 in January. Keep up the good work. Delighted to hear Ur positivity x

Hi Mark

Great to hear your news and how far you have progressed. It is such an inspiration to us all!

i am 4 weeks post op, not much pain now, just niggly twinges round op site and general aches in hip area - not had any knee pain but that may be due to no dislocation as I had Superpath procedure.

Somedays I too forget I have had anything done and just start to walk off without my crutches.  I can then walk perhaps the length of a room, but if I consciously try to do it, I feel unsteady and think, I wonder when I will be crutch free. I suppose it' all about getting your confidence back after limping around so badly for so long and I am sure as you say, the muscles have to be built up again. I know that my thigh muscles on bad side had wasted a lot.

i am sure that given another couple of weeks there will be improvement just as there has been massive improvement in the first four. I see consultant next week and would love to be walking in to his office unaided!

I am so pleased for you - it is such a life changing operation for us all and we are so lucky

All the best for your continued improvement

Kind regards Linda x
