7 weeks no restrictions or 12 weeks no restrictions ?

My first THR (left leg) was done Jan 2013, (posterior), rehab, p/t went perfectly.  I was able to go back to work (mail carrier), in 7 weeks post surgery, no restrictions.

I had my other hip done on 7/25/16, same surgeon, same technique.  This time I was told the restrictions are for 12 weeks post surgery by the surgeon.  When I went for my 2 week post op, x-ray was fine and rehab is jprogreesing perfectly.  The physican assistant told us 12 weeks, I was not to thrilled with the P.A. person.

My overall health for each surgery was/is excellent.  I can go on the patient portal and ask about the restrictions but I really dont want the possible bad news.  I have my 6 week appt on Sept 8, I guess I will find out for sure then.  This boredom s()ks.

Any ideas, opinions ??

Thanks

Hi Rich My first was left hip rep 2014 and six weeks restriction. My second was right hip which is 2 weeks old today. Again with 6 week restriction.

I am going for physio  tomorrow so I will double check that it is the same period of time. Rather strange that as mine was posterior. I had same surgeon both times in Oxford. (he has a really good reputation that is why I used him) :o)

Do u live uk or USA as uk hip restrictions seem to be 6 weeks post op so long as all goes smoothly with surgery . I do wonder as a younger pt if these cannot be reviewed for younger people as muscle tone if fit is generally better therefore recovery quicker than an older person with more co morbidities .. I will ask my surgeon in another 3 weeks as he is a research teaching surgeon .. can but ask I guess .

I live in the USA.

I actually think I am in better shape now due to adding swimming in my weekly work out regimen.

I know, I should just ask on the patient portal .

Thanks for your response.

You know I find that interesting that you mention being younger, better recovery time. I've been told being younger we tend to over do, get ahead of the game and do things way too fast as to older folks take it slower. As I found myself in the younger category and was going way to quick because I felt fine and was in good shape. Wound up with hip revision within 3 weeks of first hip. So being younger I guess has it good points and bad! Just an observation. Have a great day! Hugs, 🤗🤗 L D

Thanks for responding.

When you say physio do you mean your physical therapy/rehab or your surgeon ?

That is great you have a great surgeon.  Mine has done thousands and he

has a great reputation.

Have a geat day !!

Thanks for your observation.

Even though its 3 1/2 yr difference, I still over do it.  I guess, I need to listen to your advice (& others) to take it slower.

Enjoy your day ! X

I mean a physiotherapist who basically assesses me and will give me more exercises. I can have as much physiotherapy as I want. I go to see the surgeon 6 weeks after the op and he will just do a few wiggles here and there to see that everything is still in line. He probably wouldn't thank me for describing his technique this way. :o)

I thought that was what you meant.

The physical therapist here submits a report to the surgeon before my 2 week appt and then at 6 weeks.  (not sure if the surgeon looks at the report)

At 6 weeks the surgeon will take another x-ray, do some "wiggles", however, it is the surgeon who makes the call on the precautions.

When I started the physical therapy, they told me they estimated my physical therapy would last 6 weeks, that seems about right based on my progress so far .

Well, I finally asked on the "patient portal" if my precautions were for 7 weeks or 12 weeks.

I was told 12 WEEKS !!  So no work until 10/25.

I guess, we broke the precautions 5 weeks early with my last THR !!  I dont know how we thought it was 7 weeks the last time.  I was just told the precautions were always 12 weeks !!

My rehap/p/t is going great and my hip feels about 75 %.

Have a geat day
