7mon post operative.Hip tight&weak

Hi everyone,I had anterior THR 7 months ago.now the physical therapist evaluation. The leg very weak & right at the hip joint. Still cannot lift it over my other leg yet.have to pull it up in my small suv car.

All the way down the thigh very tender to her pressing on it.

.Disappointing. I have n been working out  three days since last August. Also walking 3_4 miles a day.

Hi Ginger,

need THR but having second thoughts about it... people tell me I should wait as long as I can to have it Im only 50 now , what do you think

Ginger are you doing too much?   I couldn't manage that at 14 months.  Could not go back to pilates snd yoga til 10 months.  I needed much more rest and recuperation and only now am building up muscle tone.  I would try and put my feet up 3 times a day for an hour and see if you can gather strength and heal whatever is going on in the tissue/muscle and underlying structures.  It is possible to be doing too much you know. ... hope that doesn't sound too preachy. ..

Wait until you can't walk. It is inevitably a lot more traumatic than you expect and healing time a lot more than 6-8 weeks. ... Read all these posts and take time over your decision. Know what you are going in for and have realistic expectations. Prepare for a year to full recovery at worst. If you are lucky it may be 3 months or so but it goes on changing. ...

If your having lot of pain, and interfering with your daily life. Then maybe.many people here have jade surgery at forty two and younger.Mart not be the she do much add Joe much damage to your hip you haveThis surgery is much more involved than I thought. Needs careful consideration.

No that's ok. But what I'm going now so much leases than I was doing.I'm,69yr.and want to do more things like travel.

Jimmy,

Your pain will tell you when you're ready for your surgery. When you get tired of it taking the quility of your life. In the mean time and I can't express this enough, look for a surgeon that is highly recommended and has done hundreds of the THR successfully. I live in the US and have seen several botched jobs so I took my time finding a doctor. I am 10 wks post THR and have not had any problems. Sometimes I feel so good I forget I had the surgery. I had the minimally invasive surgery so my incision was only 7 inches long and vertically between my hip and buttock. They glued it closed so no stiches on the outside. My legs are even. I also had it as outpatient, the surgery took 45 minutes and I was at the surgical center for less than  24 hours. The implant I have is the kind that is rough with holes in so it is not glued, the bone grows into it. It lasts 25 years if I don't abuse it with heavy sports activity. There is also a new procedure called "Super Path". There are only 17 doctors in the US that do it because it's so new but someday it will probably the norm. Google it if your interested. I still have some pain after ten wks but it's only when I first stand up and sometimes sleeping in the wrong position. I was able to quit taking  pain meds after 2 wks. There are risks with every surgery, but it seems the anterior method has the most problems. Just go online and do some research. You will be glad you did.

Good luck,

Kathee

Bye the way Jimmy. My incision is only 3" not 7. Big typo!

It is amazing how much we have to endure after surgeries.  Sorry for your set backs.  Is there a reason for thi. tightness and weakness?

Hugs!

Dawn

Anterior approach it's the problem.

The incision from inner thigh and down the front of leg.

There are flexor and extender tendons.,plus many major muscle  groups. That the doctor  cuts our stretches everything apart. To be able to get to the femur head of the thigh bone.

Then they have to dislocated the hip.so all those tissues are injured and take time to heal

Thank you for taking your time to respond to my post .hugs

My new surgeon has little regard for the anterior approach and is doing my revision the old fashioned way, through the out side of the hip.  He said he sees a great many patients who need revisions because of the anterior approach, and especially from my area in my State.

Hugs

Ii would never have another anterior approach..

People with the type you're going to have do so much better and heal faster too.

I wonder if all those revisions in your state are the same doctor.

I live in Kansas.mine was done in Kansas city mo.

Makes me wonder, but my first surgeon did the first one perfectly.  Go figure about how he botched my second one.  I will pursue legal advice.  Why did he not see his blunder and what type of character would let someone suffer so?

Exactly.why didn't he see it was loose looking at his X-Rays?z How did he miss the screw coming out?

I just reread your post and it reads as if the procedure was so straightforward I am agog with astonishment when I recall my own traumatic experience.  Which state are you in? My friend in Boston wants me to come there for my other side as I cannot risk a similar purgatory. Would you be willing to divulge the cost and your age please? Also did you see the pre and post X-rays to ascertain how much bone was sacrificed to accommodate your implant. Mine was a shocking loss. Many thanks G

Sorry see you're in NC. Also astonished at the no staples closure. My scar is still livid and ugly. You seem to represent the good standard in both procedure and recovery. Your surgeon should be applauded.

Hi Jimmy,

Me, too.  I'm only 50 but the surgeons (I went o 7 different ones) all say THR right now.  I'm scheduled in 2 weeks, the is something definitely wrong with my leg which has lost a lot of muscle and tone  but I'm scared of surgery and something going wrong.

Why do you have to have it and what are you going to do?

Hi Kathe,

Do you have any restrictions due to the THR ? can you bend, crawl, put on your socks or cross your legs things like that.   Thank you !  Jimmy

This is NOT going to get any better, you probably need an additional small surgery on your Psoas Muscle which will clear it up completely.

This is the test. Lay down g=flat on your back with your legs extended. Keeping your heel in contact with the bed, pull your leg up towrds your chest while bending the knee. The result should be no pain.

Part two of test. Lay flat on your back and keeping your knee straight unbent, try and lift your leg using only your hip/groin mmuscles. Probably you cna't do it. That is your psoas muscle. The longer you wait the more a callus, scar tissue will form on top the the Psoas muscle. Bring this article with you to the doctor. But he already knows this, he has probably jsut been waiting this out to see if it will clear up on it's own. It has been long enough, he cna't ignore this any longer.

Wow had no idea. I stunt b back to the PT one week ago..She did those test I failed she talked about that muscle. And showed me pictures of that muscle.

I saw the doctor the surgeon talked about all this is just started at the floor like he was thinking..But said nothing

These symptoms had n been since surgery.

Getting the leg into the car,I can't lift it by itself.I have to use my hands.also the bed.I kinda have to throw it up or walk it up along the bed it hurts.

Monday when I got down on my knees to hammer stakes into the ground to hold my angel up.

I could not get to my feet.I had to crawl all the way to my car I in the  garage too pull up to My feet.

Very embarrassing in the morning purple could seed me.Thank you for this article.
