I am 7 months post partial knee op and have regained good use of the knee at age 53. I have resumed road cycling and have completed several 120km rides with little knee pain. I am due to have my other knee done in October as walking is the problem on the bad knee( bone on bone) what I do experience is when standing in one place and try and lift the leg with the new joint there is a significant pain until I get walking again. What could this be? Any body experienced this and does it become less with time thanks.
Regards Rob
Hi My TKR was 1st Octoer so were about the same time. Any pain now is muscular. I dont have any problems standing, I can walk for miles on the flat, not too bad on slight slopes up or down but coming down a bank is painful but Ive found there is less pain next day. Im waiting for a new bike to be delivered, its quite a few years since I rode one but Ill give it a go. Im 70 and have to look for flat roads in the north penines
Hi Robert, I experienced the same thing standing in one place. Stiffness was awful. What I did was to go to my steps put the operative leg on the first step and bend the knee as far forward as it will go. Do this about six times you will see how the stiffness/pain will be alleviated. I am 5 months post op. I am now truly running up and down the stairs. Hope this helped. Good luck with your recovery.
Thank you for your reply hope the cycling goes well
Hi Sandi, thanks for the reply, do you still get the stiffness pain if standing in one place or has it gone completely?
Regards Rob
Hi Rob again there is just a little sensation of tightness but the uncomfortable stiffness has just about gone. I never thought I was going to feel so good, it did take a full five months to get to this point. I have to have my other knee done, but I am holding off, i can't put my husband through this quite so soon. Lol! Do the step excercise like I mentioned, that was my saving grace. Good luck to you.
Hi Robert, I am just over 6 months post TKR and I have had this problem. It was there from the beginning, I could walk quite well but when I stopped and just stood in one place (most common when being dragged round the shops by the wife) the knee feels like it is stiffening up. If I sat down it eased up and if I started walking again it would go after about 10 - 15 paces. I gather it is the blood struggling to get through the knee when it is weight bearing due to all the reconstruction work. The good news is it seems to be getting better and I am thinking another couple of months it will go completely. Mine still clicks and clacks but I am told that would get better over time but after 12 months the clicking that was left would likely be what I would be stuck with and as it doesn't really hurt I am not too bothered.
Regards Paul
I am only 7 weeks post op today Paul. I have wondered about the clicks & clacks in my knees (bilateral TKR). Another thing to write off as normal. Sitting for any length of time is the worst for me, & stairs still.
Thanks for the reply Paul, I guess I am still early days at 7 months hopefully will continue to improve
