8 days out from double THR and I can’t sleep

Argh!  I’m tired but can’t get comfortable enough lying on my back to fall and stay asleep.  Anyone else awake?

Sleeping is one of the hardest things to deal with I think. I battled sleepless nights for weeks. or woke up in pain every hour. I always tried to force myself up and around a hour or two before bed. And I was bed bound for two weeks with major swelling. My leg got so big my skin split and I was only able to get around in wheel chair. Good luck

Try to get all the rest you can, but don't worry toooo much about the clock, it seems to be a pretty regular complaint on this forum, one the Dr's don't bother to mention.

I used to get up in the middle of the night and watch TV, and often fall asleep in my easy chair.

I too am a double THR, but mine were 15 months apart.

And yes it does get better.

Hi Christina, it has been a year since my first surgery and the only way I could sleep was with morphine. I then took myself off and could not sleep at all . I took cbd and then slowly got myself off too. I had hours of insomnia and I became a night owl, sleeping an hour here and there. I learnt how to draw, watched full series of planet Earth, planned all my goals for the next 5 years and more. The pain finally went away, directly related to my legs getting stronger. It took a good 3 months, and then the other hip by ceased and had to go for surgery again. This time no pain but again brain is wired. Restrictions do not allow me to do any activity. Continued with my art journey and did as much as I could to keep mind busy. Again sleeping about 3 hours due to discomfort but not pain. I , now avoid all caffeine, have a very regular schedule. If I don't get to bed by 11 pm, then no sleep for me. Most days I sleep 5 hours. Good luck, stay busy and you will get some sleep.

I am 9 days post op and same issue. I bought a body pillow as my Physio said that I can sleep on my side. You put between your legs and gives good support. I bought a memory foam on line on Amazon.ca.

Important when you roll to non operative side to use the whole body at once. I use my headboard to assist me in pulling me on my side. Last night was the first night using it. The operative side feels a bit tight when you first fo it but it now gives me the option to sleep 2 ways. I had a pretty good sleep. I did not get staples but dissolvable stitches so I am not sure if that will make a difference on how tight your incision area will feel.

Hi Christina,

Try sleeping from your back to your “good” side.  That worked for me.

Steve

I think the first two weeks were the worst. Just before 2 weeks I tried sleeping on my good side with a pillow between my knees and I found that I could then sleep for an hour or two and now im getting 3 or 4 hours a night so pleased with that.

Check with your consultant whether it is safe to sleep and turn on your good side first. At first it was a bit sensitive to turn on your good side but after a few nights it got easier to spin round gently into the required position. I turned my to top half first and then gently turned the legs round. The pillow is a must between the knees.
