8 days post thr and ok

Morning,  Had my thr op last Wed 19th. Op at noon, on my feet by 7pm.A bit sore and uncomfortable but not too much swelling. Next morning off for xray, then physio to test my abilities walking, sitting down etc., then doc came and said they were pleased with my progress and I got to go home. Home by 4pm. Not comfortable sleeping on my back but hey ho its not forever. Been out every day since Sat. for little walks. Now using one crutch at home and two outside. Still have a bit of pain, but WOW! that awful arthritis pain has gone. I know this pain will go soon. Nurse came yesterday, dressing off, wound fully healed. So I am a Happy Bunny. Wish I had done it long ago. Well worth it.

Mr Apthorp at Conquest did my op and I am so glad about that as he has such a good reputation. Can't thank the team there enough for their care and dedication.  So if you are thinking of having this op, I would say go for it. It really isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

So glad you have had such a good result.  Remember you have had a major op so don't go doing too much too soon.  It's really good to hear that you are doing so well.

Take care

Stella

Hi Stella, thanks for your reply. You are right, it is major surgery and it will take some time to heal. I make sure I get plenty of rest and have a lie down in afternoon. I know when I've done enough and won't sit. I am also doing my exercises to speed up my recovery and I have a lovely husband to do all the fetching and carrying LOL so hopefully things should go ok. Just can't believe how well I feel without that really bad pain I had.

Kind Regards,

Cathy

Hi Cathy

I'm glad you had such great results.....dont go madcheesygrin

Exercise and rest ...........and your painkillers at first.

You seem to be fine but I was told "keep on top of the pain dont play catch up with it" In other words at the beginning take your meds as prescribed dont wait until you are sore and then take them.

Glad you are so well

Hi its a good feeling that pain you had went away. The only pain you will be experiencing is the muscle that is weak and needs strengthening. I am 4 months post-op and feel great. On Tuesday was my first day back to work. Doing acoustical ceilings killed my thighs because i was using a ladder which i had no choice. But you will be fine once you do your exercises and eat food with high protein. This will assist your recovery faster. Don't over do your exercises keep doing them as prescribed you will increase resistence gradually.

My Best,

Desi NYC

This is exactly how I was after my first THR in July this year.  Had my other THR done  8 days ago but due to being clamped to protect my other new hip my recovery seems to be slower.  On a positive note, like you the arthritis pain has totally gone and I know that in time I will be free from pain.  Would recommend anyone who needs this procedure to go and get it done.

three words of advice though ... CRAWL, WALK, RUN

It is so good to see you are healing so nicely.  I am 11 weeks post op and coming along.  Still sore when I put full pressure on operated hip.  Building strenghth every day.  Good luck to you!

thats right crawl, wlak and run that is how it works and guaranteed your recovery will go smooth. Otherwise, you will, only yourwelf, setback your recovery. Best wishes...

Hi Eileen, You are so right. This morning I waited to take my meds and now I regret it. Won't make that mistake again. Good advice. Thanks

Hi Desi, thanks for the advice. I am doing exactly what  I was told regards to exercises, as I don't want any setbacks.

Lost my appetite first few days but coming back now  so eating a balanced diet. I usually have a healthy diet anyway so just making sure I eat a bit more protein than normal.

Hope you are ok now after your ladder escapade. They say it will take quite a long time before you will get back to full capacity. Take it easy .

best wishes,  Cathy UK

Hi Roy, hope you feel better soon. You've got it right with the CRAWL, WALK, RUN theory. Small steps, not overdoing things.

Glad that you too are rid of that awful pain. It's such a relief, isn't it?

The reason I posted on here really was to encourage anyone who was afraid of having the op, to just go ahead and do it. I too was so scared, but my GP said "Do you want this to go on and get worse, or do you want another 15 years without pain" Needless to say I opted for the latter. So glad I did it. So to these hesitant people here, take the plunge.

Best wishes, and I hope you start to recover soon.

Hi mkwins,  thanks for your good wishes.  Everyone has been so supportive and have given me some sound advice which I really appreciate it. Hope things get easier for you every day.

Hi Evelyn, So sorry to hear you are having so much pain. Its good that you are seeing your consultant soon and hopefully he will be able to help you.  I must admit , it's really not comfortable in bed at night, especially sleeping on your back. Even though I don't suffer much pain, I do wake several times during the night because of this position. Try to catnap during the day or have a lie down, I find this helps to catch up on much needed sleep. I hope you get the help you need next week and get pain free very soon.

Best wishes,

Cathy

Hi there, intresting as you say after surgery you sleep on your back.  Do you have a special pillow to put under your knees?  I do that but can only do 5 min. because of the hip pain gong down my right leg.  That is the one that is getting surgery.  My left hip on the MRI shows wear on the cartlidge and groin hutst too but not as much as the right.  The dr. will see how things go after the right hip is done.  May help the left leg and my back from popping so much.  Tell me also besides the pillow what kind of hip surgery did they do on the THR?  I understand one is more invasive then another.  Thanks for writing.

I am sorry Eileen, you have had such a hard time.  I understant the fustration.  I can only move in certain positions and at this point only sleep on my right side for it is the less pain of other positions.  I wake up about 10 times per night.  Toss a bit and moan then fall asleep again.  So we persever and know that better days are coming.  I have found myself more sympatetic to those who are permanetly disabled.  I know none of our pain is waisted when we take it and use it to help others.  I pray relief to you my friend from across the waters.

Hi Evelyn, I don't have a pillow, but could be a good idea if it makes you more comfortable. I was told by the hospital to sleep on my back for a while, then once I felt comfortable enough to sleep on my side, to sleep on my operated side, sleeping on your good side can result in dislocation if you are not careful.  I am the opposite from you in that I had the THR on my left side but also have arthritis in my right hip, but thankfully have had no problems as yet with that one. Fingers crossed.  I had an uncemented, metal and plastic hip, and the procedure was posterior so the wound is on the side of my hip. They say this type is more invasive but luckily I haven't had problems up to now. Thank God.  Have you been prescribed some strong painkillers and anti inflammatory drugs to help ease the pain? I know how much I needed them before my op as the pain can be unbearable. I hope that once you have your surgery you will feel much better and that awful pain should disappear.  You might think this is strange but close friends and family say they can see the difference in my eyes. They said they knew by my eyes how much pain I was in. Now that has gone, it makes such a difference to your moods and how you appear.

I feel for you as I know what you are going through and it isn't pleasant. Hopefully it will soon be behind you.

love, Cathy

Hi Evelyn

Well its 10 months since my 2nd THR and I'm still on 2 crutches....its this blinkin' fracture that is causing a lot of pain. Plus crutches are a nusiance

I'm a volunteer for our Arthritis Care Branch.....drop in stands where people can come and ask all about arthritis {some people know nothing about it} others are diagnosed and then just sent away with no information.....they find it good to talk to someone in the same position as them and to ask questions.....if we cant answer their questions we have a file where we can look things up and sign post them to others.

Praying for both of us

Love

Hi there, lets see you said your got the left side operated on, so what side can you sleep on?  The operated leg or the other?

I have been perscribed pain pills and it is Norco.  But it only helps about 10% and it causes constipation.  My dr said if I can stay off it do so as it is very hard on the body.  So I am trying to hang on.  I take on once in a while when I can't stand it anylonger.  Sure brings you to tears.

I have lost 30 pounds preparing for surgery but I am overweight and still have a lot to lose.  Its not going to all come off in a few weeks as I still need to lose about 70 pounds.  These holidays here with Thanksgivng and Christmas is hard but I have to continue.  Got a little off track and need to be on the wagon again.

I do believe you when your family and friends say they see your eyes different.  We do show it through our eyes as the expression of what we are going through.

I have heard that all the pain from the arthritis is gone after surgery....hard for me to comprehend as I have been in so much pain for so long.  Tell me what about the pain from the surgery what is that like?

I want to go on vacations I have lost so much of doing fun things and being retired with my husband I can't go anywhere at this point.

Well thank you for writing.

Love Evelyn
