This was my 6 week review at 8 weeks and the news is good. I am now walking without a stick and no limp! I have very little pain - more of a muscle ache, especially when I over do it - and no need for any pain medication. The restrictions have been lifted - so goodbye to that lovely (but useful) item in the bathroom, the raised toilet seat. I also received a warning about still being careful bending at the hip for the next 6 weeks. No real worries with that, my hip soon lets me know if I'm doing something it doesn't like!
The bad news is that my other hip (which hadn't been hurting despite also showing severe OA on the x-ray), is now beginning to hurt. The surgeon is going to keep an eye on it with regular follow up appointments (the next one in December) but suspects I will have to have it replaced at some point next year. He did add that he would be only too pleased to be proven wrong (me too).
Oh well (she says with a philosophical shrug), I'll just have to wait and see.....
That's excellent news that you are walking with no sticks and not a limp, happy for you . I am two weeks and 3 days post op ( right hip) I need to get my left done soon too. I have avascular nercrosis in both hips since I was 9 years old. I do admit the first week was hell for me and I also ended back in hospital. I had my first physio appointment today she is happy with my hip. I can't wait for the day I come off my crutches I hate them they are the most annoying thing ever!
Sorry to here that about your other hip I hope you don't need to get it replaced.
Hi Cloe - this is great news about your new hip although slightly tempered by the news about your other hip. I am sorry for you in this respect, but is not uncommon. I am going for 2nd one in September and 6 others in the forum responded recently to my post about others getting a 2nd hip in August or September!
It is also good news for many people who come to the forum wondering if a THR is the way to go and for others still early in their THR journey.
Great on the good review that is wonderful no stick or limp! Awesome.....Sorry to hear your other hip is hurting hope you are able to hold off for a while on another surgery. Hugs....Barb
I too had my 6 week check up today and got the same News! A few new exercises to do, also no bending sideways! My other hip will also need to be done at some point, I have to say that one feels worse now. Happy to be able to get rid of equipment also!
Seem strange to be able to do goings again but have to say a little scary!
arghhhh ... How disappointing about the other though -- I remember how totally devastated I felt when I was told that the other (left) hip's cartilage had gone from mild to severe loss in 6 months time --- (1st xray of both hips were taken October 2014 ) - I did not realize at that time that I was not abnormal as many here on the forum were also having their 2nd hip replacement - I was in great company -
Unfortunately, for me, recovering from 1st THR did not take place to the fullest, so to speak - lot of pain in unoperated leg so new hip/leg had to support me perhaps before it could do so properly ...
Hi Megan You have my sympathy the first few weeks are the hardest - you can't do the things that you want to and the bloody crutches get tangled up with each other, your legs and anything else (often at the same time).
I'm afraid its patience, perserverance and a bit more patience. It does get better!
I can honestly say that, despite being absolutely terrified at the news, having the op was the best thing that I've done and if I need to have the other hip done, well then thats what I'll do.
Yes I noticed that a lot of people are getting their 2nd hip done in August/September. Good luck to all, I hope the ops go well.
I can't say that I am surprised that my other hip is beginning to play up - as my surgeon said in my referral letter - 'Her right hip is grossly arthritc. I note that her left hip is only slightly less so'
The surgeon said that when someone presents with OA in both hips, it can go either way - sometimes the other hip doesn't need any treatment, but other times the pain from the first hip masks the pain of the second hip. So once the first hip has been treated, the pain from the second hip then makes itself known. Unfortunately, the latter scenario has raised its head with me. I just hope that I don't need the op on the second hip any time soon.
How is your shoulder now? Did you get the hip done or are you still waiting?
I definitely won't leave it too long having learnt my lesson with my first hip. By the time I had the op, I was in constant pain, couldn't sleep as kept being woken up in pain every time I moved and could barely walk. Not going to happen with the second hip - the surgeon is going to be keeping an eye on it. So as soon as it starts affecting my life I will ask for the op.
Poor you, that's not good news. How are things now?
I'm not surprised with the news on the other hip - I wish it was otherwise, but the surgeon did warn me that a 2nd hip replacement was very likely. However, I've been really fortunate in having (so far) a really good and speedy recovery, so I'm fairly philisophical about having the second op. I just hope that I delay it for 18 months/2 years.
Fortunately not soon - the surgeon will be keeping an eye on it , a watching brief if you like, and will act accordingly when needed. Hopefuly not for quite a while yet - fingers crossed.
Totally true. I've notice a difference already and it's only been 2 two weeks and 4 days!. A lot of people have Said that to me it's worth it in the end. How does your new hip feel? Thank-you for your reply!
Hi Chloe glad to hear your good news at your check. It's good advice not to do any bending. I didn't realise and after my check I did some gardening resulting in severe muscle spasm in my groin. It was a setback but when my hip was X-rayed that was fine.
I wish you luck with your second hip and a pain free recovery.
