8 weeks post op

8 weeks post op and 4 days into a cruise. Using the ships long corridors to practice walking unaided, hubby being a hard task master, you flap your arms it is uneven etc. cannot retaliate much as he went through it 4 years ago and recovered very well. StIll he is trying his best to help. Being on here and seeing the many passengers in wheelchairs, scooters, with false legs and all manner of mobility problems had made me really thankful that I "only" have a hip replacement to recover from.

ha I can relate to the flapping of the arms, it was pointed out to me too..and so I made a effort to stop doing that and it helped me walk a little more normal, tho I still limp at 3 months, have fun on your cruise girl!!

Good for you Maggie, you enjoy your cruise, the old saying springs to mind theres always someone worse than yourself.

Hi Maggie, where are you, lucky girl!  You have answered a question for me.  We had the most miserable Christmas last year, no tree, no decs, M&S food, all because I was suffering so from pain in the knees.  I had nearly three months of being unable to walk before being diagnosed as needing a THR.  I hope to have my op in late Sept or Oct and my husband has suggested a cruise for Christmas and New Year.  The one we fancy goes from Southampton across the Atlantic to the Caribbean.  I am wondering if I will be up to it and if the weather might mean stormy seas.  Reading what you have said it gives me hope that our plans will come to fruition.  Have a wonderful holiday and keep flapping those arms!  Jx

We started at Southampton, just left Lisbon on way to Canaries. I am sure you will be up to it, I asked surgeon at 7.5 week chech up, driving, 90 degree rule, work , cruise on Monday. He said yes to all

Have tried hands in pockets and Duke of Edinbourgh style and clutching onto bag. Have been told that I am improving. Just been supervised doing standing exercises holding onto balcony rail.

Gee Maggie we are still waiting to go on a cruise too!  But why so many infirmed people? What kind of cruise is that? Yes my husband is also giving me a hard time to go to the gym already, and swim and use the machines etc.  Doesn't he get it IT HURTS !!!!!   6 weeks post op.  And at 8 it still hurts??? Oh my!

Anthem of the seas is the ship. I have noticed before that there are many people with problems on cruises. I just think it is one of the few holidays that is possible for them and their carers to have where they are well looked after. Long wide corridors, lifts to every floor, some cabins are made wheel chair friendly etc etc. There are 4000 passengers on here, suppose up to 200 -300 are those needing help

Whow this is news to me.  Thank you for the info. I will have to tell my husband.

I am SO SO SO Happy today.  GilCAt helped me so MUCH by POSTING she was taking Naproxin.  I have it here, never thought about taking it.  And boy did it make a GREAT difference in my Pain, I can now DO things.  Garden, walk etc.  I have been in bad shape since I can not take any pain meds.  The make me sicker than the pain!  So I feel like I am well on my way now to healing.  I HATE staying in bed and a chair and just gaining weight.   I hope you are having a happy day too.  Love ANtoinette

Whow Jennifer: I don't feel so bad now waiting 8 years to get my hip replaced.  We lived on the Big Island of Hawai'i where I am from and have TERRIBLE health care.  It took us moving to the country of Panama finding out their health care is nill too, then moving to the US here in Florida before I could get it done.  So I can truly relate to your waiting and waiting on getting the knees done.  I keep telling people who have knee pain, "You will go get the replacement" when you are crying like I was, and you can't drive it hurts too much to just touch the pedal!

Aloha!  How wonderful to hear from a Hippy so far away.  Not so wonderful to hear that you have suffered for so long.  We moan about our health care in this country but I will have waited six months from diagnosis until operation.  if I had paid for the treatment (€24000+) I could have been admitted within weeks.  I choose to wait.  Funnily enough I answered this discussion from a lady on a cruise which you may have read. After careful thought, and some good advice from my travel agent, we have decided against a cruise across the Atlantic in December.  The agent suggested a cruise to, guess where, Hawaii! We would have to fly to LA which could be a nightmare around Christmas time but we are considering it.  What a coincidence that you have replied to me.  I wish you well. Jxx

Anotoinette so pleased the Naproxin worked. you sound so much better now. xx Don't overdo things though slow and steady is the name of the game. xx
